The Genesis Scottish Open, co-hosted by the DP World Tour and PGA Tour, is being held at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland for the sixth time this week. This unique golf course in the “Home of Golf” was founded by Jerry Sarvadi, who comes from an immigrant family of Romanian descent. Sarvadi discovered golf at a young age as a caddie and later taught himself to play the game. After establishing a successful business in aviation fuel wholesaling, Sarvadi found himself drawn to the idea of building a golf course in Scotland.
Despite initial skepticism, a chance visit to the neighboring Muirfield golf course in Scotland sparked Sarvadi’s interest in Scottish golf. He eventually negotiated a deal for the property that would become the Renaissance Club and raised $12 million from initial members to fund the project. Renowned architect Tom Doak was originally hesitant to take on the project, but after persistent efforts by Sarvadi, he agreed to design the course. The Renaissance Club opened to rave reviews in 2008, with subsequent modifications to prepare the course for professional tournaments.
Sarvadi’s vision to host professional events at the Renaissance Club came to fruition with the Genesis Scottish Open, a tournament that attracts a strong international field. The event has been enhanced by its co-sanctioning with the PGA Tour, offering full FedEx Cup points to competitors. Hosting pro golf is a family affair for the Sarvadis, with Jerry’s brother Paul sponsoring a PGA Tour Champions event in Houston. The success of the Genesis Scottish Open has solidified the Renaissance Club’s reputation as a premier golf destination.
With two more years on its contract to host the DP World Tour and potential for continued partnership with Genesis, the Renaissance Club is poised for future success. Sarvadi has passed on day-to-day operations to his younger brother, allowing him to focus on the long-term strategic vision for the club. The Sarvadi family’s entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to golf have culminated in the Renaissance Club’s status as a top golf destination in Scotland.
The evolution of the Renaissance Club from a dream project to a world-class golf course hosting professional events is a testament to Jerry Sarvadi’s perseverance and vision. The unique history of the club, from its immigrant roots to its current status as a premier golf destination, showcases the Sarvadi family’s commitment to excellence in the sport. With a rich legacy of hosting major events and a bright future ahead, the Renaissance Club stands as a shining example of immigrant success and passion for the game of golf.
