LIV Golf has faced criticism for hosting events at mostly unrecognizable courses in the United States, with only a few former PGA Tour venues like the Old White Course and Trump National Doral on the schedule. The lack of high-profile tracks at LIV events has been a point of contention, prompting discussions about securing more prestigious courses like Chambers Bay, which hosted the 2015 U.S. Open.

Negotiations are ongoing between LIV Golf and Pierce County, which operates Chambers Bay, about potentially hosting a future event at the course. While there are concerns about joining forces with an organization backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, it may become more acceptable if the PGA Tour decides to partner with PIF. Pierce County is open to discussions with LIV Golf but is proceeding cautiously due to potential complications.

Chambers Bay, opened in 2007, has hosted significant events like the 2015 U.S. Open but has not attracted consistent interest from organizations like the USGA for future events. While it has secured championships like the 2022 U.S. Women’s Amateur, 2027 U.S. Junior, and 2033 U.S. Amateur, a more regular rotation of tournaments is desired to increase exposure for the course. The course’s dynamic pricing system and limited use of electric carts pose challenges in attracting golfers.

Among high-profile municipal courses, Chambers Bay is considered one of the most expensive with weekend green fees ranging from $205 to $345 for non-residents. This pricing is significantly higher than other municipal courses like Bethpage Black in New York and Torrey Pines South in San Diego, which charge less for visitors. The cost of playing at Chambers Bay, coupled with limited amenities like electric carts, may impact its appeal to a wider audience.

With ongoing discussions between LIV Golf and Pierce County, the potential for Chambers Bay to host a future event is uncertain but promising. Securing a prestigious course like Chambers Bay could enhance the reputation and appeal of LIV Golf events in the United States, providing a more recognizable and esteemed venue for competitors and spectators alike. The decision to partner with LIV Golf, as well as potential involvement from the PGA Tour, will play a significant role in the future of golf events at Chambers Bay.
