Cobra has recently launched their new Cobra LIMIT3D irons, which are set to break new ground in the golf market as the first commercially available clubs made through 3D printing. These irons feature a unique hollow design with an intricate steel lattice structure on the inside, saving up to 100 grams of mass by using tungsten weight pads in the low heel and toe areas. The design combines the compact shape of a players iron with the forgiveness of a game-improvement club, all while maintaining the solid feel of a forged blade. The limited edition sets of these irons will be available for $3,000, with only 500 sets being produced and released on June 7.

Traditionally, irons have been produced through forging or investment casting, both of which have their advantages and limitations. 3D printing has been used for prototyping in the golf industry, and Cobra has utilized this technology in their King 3D Printed putter lineup and for producing prototypes for tour players. The Cobra LIMIT3D irons are created through a process called direct metal laser sintering, which builds up layers of a design with fine metal powder. While prototype designs and polymer structures have been produced using 3D printing, creating a full set of irons for commercial availability has not been practical until now.

The interior of the Cobra LIMIT3D iron features a lattice structure that joins the front and back, creating a weight-saving design that enhances feel and performance. This structure is made from the same 316L stainless steel powder used for the rest of the iron. The lattice work is like a series of ultra-fine I-beams, providing stiffness and density similar to a solid iron. This design allows for a more forgiving iron with a compact shape, offering forgiveness without sacrificing feel. The innovative lattice structure was developed with the help of computer-assisted design technology from nTop, making it easier to optimize performance and forgiveness in real time.

In terms of performance, the Cobra LIMIT3D iron boasts the lowest center of gravity and highest forgiveness (MOI) of any of Cobra’s current players or players distance irons. Internal testing has shown that these irons can provide more distance and tighter dispersion than Cobra’s current King Tour irons. Despite the advanced technology and performance benefits of the LIMIT3D irons, they are priced at just over double the cost of a set of King Tour irons. This represents a significant achievement in making innovative golf club technology more accessible to consumers, as the cost of producing such clubs using traditional methods would have been much higher just a decade ago. The Cobra LIMIT3D irons offer golfers the opportunity to experience cutting-edge design and performance in a limited edition set of irons that push the boundaries of what is possible in golf club manufacturing.
