Gary Player, the legendary golfer, faced a challenging decision when it came to selecting a partner for the PNC Championship. With a large family including six children, 22 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, Player had numerous options to choose from. In the past, he had competed with his son, Wayne, but as the family expanded, he wanted to ensure he selected a family member in top form. This led him to create the Grandsons Challenge, the Cousins Qualifier, or the Choker’s Cup, where family members compete for the opportunity to play with him in the tournament.

The most recent qualifier took place at the Bear’s Club in Jupiter, Fla., where four of Player’s grandkids participated. Seventeen-year-old Alex Hall emerged as the winner, shooting a 78, seven shots ahead of his cousin, Jordan Player. Despite only starting to play golf two-and-a-half years ago, Alex displayed impressive skill in tough conditions on a challenging course. He credits his rapid improvement to daily practice and guidance from his grandfather, a Hall of Famer, who has helped him both mentally and physically.

While Alex is no stranger to competitive golf, participating in high school tournaments and the Pennsylvania state championship, the Grandsons Challenge was a nerve-wracking experience for him. Despite a rocky start, he found his rhythm and held on to secure the victory, earning him a spot in the PNC Championship. With aspirations of playing Division I college golf, Alex sees this opportunity not only as a chance to play with his grandfather but also to catch the eye of college coaches.

In addition to the PNC Championship, Alex will also compete in the Gary and Vivienne Player Foundation Junior Challenge, a unique 90-hole event created by his grandfather to raise funds for children in poverty in the U.S. However, his focus for now is on the upcoming tournament, where he aims to make a mark and potentially secure a win. With a strong desire to succeed and the support of his family, Alex is determined to perform well at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, where the PNC Championship will take place.

While much of the spotlight may be on Charlie Woods, son of Tiger Woods, Alex is eager to showcase his skills and make a name for himself in the golfing world. With his dedication to the game and the guidance he has received from his grandfather, Alex is poised to make a mark in the sport. As he prepares for the tournament ahead, he remains focused on his goal of not just participating but truly competing and aiming for victory alongside his legendary grandfather.
