Portmarnock Resort in Ireland has recently completed a two-year renovation project on its golf course, which is now known as Jameson Golf Links. Designed by Bernhard Langer and opened in 1995, the course is located just 20 minutes away from the center of Dublin. Prior to the renovation, the course ranked No. 45 on Golfweek’s Best list of top modern layouts in Great Britain and Ireland. The final piece of the renovation puzzle was the completion of the new 17th hole, which has been converted from a par 3 to a short par 4 playing 355 yards to a tabletop green with all new bunkering.

Most of the renovation work focused on the back nine of the course. Both the 12th and 14th holes have been converted from par 4s to par 5s, and the former par-5 13th is now a par 4. The 15th hole was also converted from a par 4 to a par 3. The par-4 eighth hole was straightened before making the turn to allow for an expansion of the course’s irrigation lake. Overall, the course now plays to a par of 72 at 7,266 yards off the back tees, which is approximately 100 yards longer than before the renovation.

The renovation of Jameson Golf Links was led by Jeff Lynch, the director and senior architect of (re)GOLF, a design firm with a presence in the British Isles, continental Europe, and North America. Lynch aimed to enhance the connection between guests and the coastal experience, augmenting the natural landscape and strategy of the layout. The goal was to deliver a handcrafted landscape for both golfers and the environment to be proud of.

Formerly known as Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links, the course is part of the full-service Portmarnock Resort, which was acquired by Sandman Hotel Group in 2019. The resort has undergone large renovations and upgrades, including those to the golf course. Director of Golf Paul McCanny praised the work done by Jeff Lynch and the (re)GOLF Design team, as well as other partners involved in the renovation. The aim was to maximize the dunescape and elevate the golfing experience, making Jameson Golf Links one of the best links golf experiences in Ireland.

With the completion of the renovation project, Jameson Golf Links at Portmarnock Resort offers a challenging yet fair golfing experience for players of all levels. The course’s strategic layout and picturesque coastal views provide a unique and memorable golfing experience for visitors and members alike. The enhancements made to the back nine, including the conversion of several holes to improve playability and strategy, contribute to the overall appeal of the course.

The partnership between (re)GOLF Design, DAR Golf, Aquaturf Solutions, and Jameson Golf Links maintenance team has resulted in high-quality work that has been well-received by both members and guests at the resort. The feedback regarding the changes made to the course has been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the improvements to the links layout. The resort’s commitment to providing an exceptional golfing experience is evident in the attention to detail and dedication to enhancing the natural beauty of the landscape.

As one of the best links golf experiences in Ireland, Jameson Golf Links at Portmarnock Resort continues to attract golfers from near and far.
