Tiger Woods’ debut in The Golf League (TGL) helped boost the competition’s viewership by almost 10%, with a peak audience of over 1.1 million tuning in to watch the match between Jupiter Links GC and Los Angeles GC. The average audience figure settled at around one million for much of the prime-time golf league’s second edition, up 9% from week one, and rose as high as 1.13 million. Despite the one-sided nature of the match, with Woods’ team dominating, the viewership numbers were impressive. The most-watched period of the broadcast was between 8:30pm and 8:45pm, with the result confirmed at 8:50pm.
The strong viewership numbers for TGL were even more impressive when compared to a live NBA game being shown at the same time. The Cleveland Cavaliers faced off against the Indiana Pacers in a high-scoring matchup, but TGL attracted more viewers than the NBA game, with 956,000 tuning in to watch the three-on-three golf competition. Additionally, TGL also out-rated a heavyweight clash between the Denver Nuggets and Dallas Mavericks later that evening, despite featuring notable NBA stars such as Jamal Murray and Russell Westbrook.
Upcoming matches in TGL are expected to attract even higher viewership numbers, with Rory McIlroy’s Boston Common making its debut against Tiger Woods’ Jupiter Links on January 28. This match is anticipated to be one of the most-viewed of the season, with two top names in professional golf facing off. Atlanta Drive GC will also be making their debut in the competition, taking on New York Golf Club. However, New York Golf Club may be without World No.2 Xander Schauffele, who recently pulled out of the American Express.
As TGL continues to gain momentum and attract a growing audience, the competition is set to become a must-watch for golf fans. With top players like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy participating, TGL offers a unique and exciting format that has the potential to revolutionize golf broadcasting.
