Angel Cabrera, the former professional golfer from Argentina, has recently been reinstated to the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions after serving a two-year prison sentence for gender violence. This decision came after Cabrera was convicted in an Argentine court in July 2021 of assaulting, threatening, and harassing his former partner, Cecilia Torres Mana. Cabrera’s legal troubles began in January of that year when he was arrested in Rio de Janeiro on charges of assault, theft, illegal intimidation, and repeated disrespect to authorities. He had been on Interpol’s “red code” list, which is used to locate and arrest individuals wanted by legal jurisdictions for extradition.

In a letter obtained by Golf Digest, Andy Levinson, senior vice president of the PGA Tour, informed Cabrera on December 18 that his suspension had been lifted with immediate effect. However, Levinson also warned Cabrera that any failure to comply with the terms of his release from prison or any additional legal issues in Argentina could result in the reinstatement of his suspension. Cabrera’s legal troubles involved assault claims made by multiple women, including Torres Mana, his former wife Silva Rivadero, and another former partner Micaela Escudero.

Despite his legal issues, Cabrera is known as one of the best golfers to come out of Argentina, with notable victories such as the 2007 U.S. Open at Oakmont and the 2009 Masters. He also had a second-place finish at Augusta National in 2013, losing to Adam Scott in a playoff. Throughout his career, Cabrera accumulated 52 official global wins and made four appearances in the Presidents Cup. In 2020, he made nine starts on the PGA Tour Champions, with his last outing at the Pure Insurance Championship in September.

Cabrera’s reinstatement to the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions has sparked debate among fans and players alike, with some questioning whether a player with his history of violence should be allowed to compete at the highest levels of professional golf. The PGA Tour has yet to make a public statement regarding Cabrera’s reinstatement, but the decision to allow him to return to competition has raised concerns about the message it sends to fans, sponsors, and the broader golf community.

As Cabrera prepares to return to competitive golf, he will need to navigate the challenges of rebuilding his reputation and addressing the issues surrounding his past behavior. It remains to be seen how fans and fellow players will react to his presence on the tour and whether his reinstatement will have any long-term implications for the sport. Despite his legal troubles, Cabrera’s talent and accomplishments on the golf course cannot be denied, but the question remains whether he deserves a second chance in the world of professional golf. Only time will tell how his return to the tour will be received and whether he can move forward from his troubled past.
