Another innovative design is Stinger, a challenging par-4 set against the backdrop of Utah’s Arches National Park. Golfers will need to draw or hook their drives through a towering 50-foot arch to reach the fairway.
Even the more traditional par-5 hole named Stone & Steeple, created by architect Gil Hanse, features stunning cross bunkers and a unique stone wall along the left side—elements that have never been seen on this side of the Atlantic.

TGL’s shift towards innovative course designs aligns with its goal of retaining viewers and attracting new fans. "We’re taking the governor off a bit," said Scott Armstrong, TGL’s chief of competitions and technology. "Last year’s format was tactical to appeal to both core golfers and general sports fans. Now we’re ready to push the limits even further."
The feedback from fans has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly regarding the unique holes. Armstrong noted that players, including PGA Tour veteran Billy Horschel, have embraced the challenge of these unconventional designs. "He’s totally gone to the other side now," Armstrong quipped, highlighting the evolving attitude towards course creativity.
Tailored Home Holes
Each of the six teams in TGL will debut their own unique "home" hole this season, allowing them to tailor setups to their advantage. Spectators can expect scenic designs, such as:
- A beach-themed hole for teams in coastal areas
- A redesigned Hollywood sign in Los Angeles
- A San Francisco Bay Area hole featuring the iconic Golden Gate Bridge
- A Boston hole set along the picturesque Charles River Esplanade
The GreenZone Innovation
Another significant improvement is the expansion of the GreenZone. Previously measuring 3,800 square feet, the green has now been enlarged to 5,270 square feet, with new configurations allowing for 12 pin positions—up from seven in the inaugural season. "Course setup-wise, we’re really freed up to use any of the pins we want, which is fun," Armstrong commented.
Looking Ahead: More changes to come
As the season progresses, fans can anticipate even more creative hole designs. Traditional architects like Hanse and Beau Welling are being encouraged to stretch their creative boundaries. The aim is to showcase players’ shot-making skills more effectively, something that has been a focal point for Armstrong in the offseason.
"These new holes are designed to force players into specific shot-making scenarios," he explained. "It’s going to be exciting to see how they adapt in real-time."
Broadcast Enhancements: A New Viewing Experience
For television viewers, TGL is innovating the broadcast experience to resemble that of traditional tour events. The use of 79 cameras for coverage—well above the typical 12-20 used for an NFL game—ensures that fans won’t miss a moment. Expect added features such as shot tracers and on-course comparisons of player standings.
With a season of experience under their belts, players are now focused on elevating their skills in front of a live audience. As Armstrong noted, the matches have transformed from novelty acts into serious competition. "The players get super competitive during practice rounds, and it makes for great viewing," he said.
