The 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club has wrapped up its first 36 holes, with Akshay Bhatia and Aaron Rai tied for the lead at 13 under. Behind them, there is a large group of players at 11 under, including Taylor Montgomery, Troy Merritt, Erik van Rooyen, and Cameron Young. Joel Dahmen, Eric Cole, and Cam Davis are tied for seventh at 10 under, three strokes behind the leaders. Despite the star power at the top, several big names failed to make the cut for the weekend.
One notable player who missed the cut is Tom Kim, who was the runner-up at last week’s Travelers Championship. Keith Mitchell, who tied for 10th at the RBC Canadian Open, also failed to advance after shooting 70-71. Robert MacIntyre, the RBC Canadian Open winner, missed the cut with two rounds of 71. Daniel Berger and Webb Simpson both shot even par to miss the cut, while Cameron Champ finished at even par for two days.
Amateur Miles Russell, a 15-year-old making his PGA Tour debut, played well with scores of 74-70 but missed the cut. Stephan Jaeger, who had previous success at Detroit Golf Club, missed the cut after shooting a 3-over 75 in the first round. Gary Woodland, who started with a 2-under 70, struggled in the second round with a 4-over 76 to miss the cut. Kevin Kisner, who has missed the cut in 11 of 14 events in 2024, also failed to advance despite a 1-under 71 in the second round.
The Rocket Mortgage Classic has seen some surprising outcomes with both top contenders and established players missing the cut. As the tournament heads into the weekend, the leaderboard remains tight with Bhatia and Rai leading the pack. It will be interesting to see how the weekend unfolds and which players will emerge as contenders for the championship.
