Colin Montgomerie, a 31-time DP World Tour winner, believes that it is time for Tiger Woods to retire from competitive golf sooner rather than later. Montgomerie expressed his concerns in an interview with the Times of London, stating that Woods no longer exhibits the passion and charismatic aura that made him a golfing legend. Reflecting on Woods’ recent performance at the 2024 U.S. Open, Montgomerie noted that Woods did not appear to enjoy a single shot and questioned his continued presence on the tour.

Following a missed cut at Pinehurst last month, Woods was asked if he thought it may have been his last U.S. Open. The 15-time major winner offered a somber admission, indicating that it may or may not be his final appearance at the prestigious tournament. Since returning to golf after a severe car crash in 2021, Woods has struggled to regain his form, playing in just nine official PGA Tour events, with multiple missed cuts and withdrawals.

Despite his goal of playing in one tournament per month in 2024, Woods has not lived up to this expectation, participating in only a handful of events this year. Montgomerie, who has been critical of Woods’ continued presence in competitive golf, believes that it is time for the 48-year-old golfer to step away from the sport. He emphasized that continuing to play at a diminished level could tarnish Woods’ legacy, comparing him to other star athletes who struggled in the twilight of their careers.

Montgomerie, a player on the PGA Tour Champions, highlighted the opportunities available for golfers to compete well into their 60s on the senior tour. He expressed his belief that Woods, having achieved so much in his career, should consider transitioning to a different phase of his life. Montgomerie will be competing in the Senior Open Championship following the Open at Troon, showcasing his longevity and success in the sport.

As Woods prepares to play in the Open Championship at Royal Troon, the golfing world eagerly awaits to see if he can recapture his past form. While Woods has not made any definitive statements about his future in golf, the speculation surrounding his retirement continues to grow. With Montgomerie and others questioning his ability to compete at a high level, Woods may soon face a decision about the next chapter of his career. Regardless of the outcome, Woods’ impact on the sport of golf will always be remembered and celebrated.
