In this edition of Timeless Tips, 20 former PGA Tour pros share their simplest tips for hitting the ball farther off the tee. Golf instruction is ever-evolving, but the best advice stands the test of time. With the ever-changing analytics in golf, the importance of hitting the ball farther off the tee has become crucial as it leads to lower scores. Golfers of all skill levels have made gaining distance off the tee a central goal. In March 1991, 20 pros shared their simplest tips for hitting the ball farther off the tee, offering insights that are still relevant today.

1. Greg Norman, a two-time major champion, recommends teeing the ball so at least half of it is above the clubface to catch it on the upswing. Sandy Lyle, another two-time major champion, suggests gripping the club firmly, not grimly. Fred Couples, the 1992 Masters champion, advises keeping your eyes intently focused on the back of the ball from address until impact. These tips focus on technical aspects of the swing that can lead to increased distance off the tee.

2. Other tips include advice from long-drive professional Mike Dunaway, who suggests thinking of the right leg as an axis and coiling around it on the backswing. JoAnne Carter, a 43-time LPGA Tour winner, emphasizes a quick weight shift to the right side and the left knee working inward at the start of the backswing. These tips focus on weight distribution and coil to create power in the swing, crucial for hitting the ball longer off the tee.

3. Scott DeCandia, a long-drive champion, recommends powering the swing by shifting the hips laterally at the start of the downswing to create an arm-hand whip. Seve Ballesteros, a five-time major winner, suggests triggering the downswing by firing the right side and pushing the right instep inward and downward simultaneously. These tips focus on the sequence of movements and hip rotation, essential for generating speed and power.

4. Jack Nicklaus, an 18-time major champion, encourages hitting the ball as hard as possible while maintaining rhythmic club swing. Arnold Palmer, a seven-time major champion, emphasizes maintaining a steady head position as you coil and uncoil around the spine. These tips from legends of the game highlight the importance of balance, rhythm, and power in the golf swing to hit the ball farther off the tee.

5. Each tip shared by the former PGA Tour pros focuses on a specific aspect of the swing, whether it’s grip pressure, weight shift, or coil in the backswing. By incorporating these simple yet effective tips into your game, you can improve your distance off the tee and ultimately lower your scores. The key is to find what works best for your swing and implement these tips consistently during practice and play.

6. The advice from these pros in 1991 is still relevant today, showcasing the timeless nature of good golf instruction. As technology and analytics continue to shape the game of golf, the fundamentals of the swing remain constant. By focusing on key aspects such as weight distribution, coil, and sequencing, golfers can enhance their performance and hit the ball farther off the tee.

7. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned golfer, improving your distance off the tee can have a significant impact on your overall game. By incorporating these 20 pro-approved power tips into your swing, you can unlock the potential for longer drives and better scoring opportunities on the course. Remember to practice these tips regularly and seek feedback from a golf professional to fine-tune your technique for maximum results.

8. In conclusion, hitting the ball farther off the tee is a common goal for golfers of all levels. By following the advice of these former PGA Tour pros and focusing on key elements of the swing, you can improve your distance and accuracy off the tee. Whether it’s grip pressure, weight shift, or hip rotation, each tip offers valuable insights that can help you maximize your potential on the golf course.
