Get ready for beach season with a towel: Say goodbye to half-wedge troubles

When facing half-wedge shots in golf, many amateurs struggle to control distance because they rely too much on their hands and arms instead of utilizing their body pivot. This can lead to inconsistent contact with the ball and poor distance control. To improve your technique, focus on blending the movement of your hands and arms with the rotation of your torso. Treat the half-wedge shot as a mini version of your full swing, with your body leading the movement, not your hands.

To help improve your pivot on half-wedge shots, try using a beach towel drill. Wedge a beach towel under your arms and across your chest as you set up with a wedge and make practice swings while keeping the towel in place. This drill helps you feel how your arms and body should work together in the swing. Pay attention to the movement of your arms and how they are guided by the rotation of your ribcage.

After practicing with the towel drill, try hitting some shots without it, focusing on recreating the feeling of the drill in your swing. Remember to keep pivoting your body throughout the swing to ensure more consistent and solid contact with the ball. By improving your technique and incorporating more body rotation into your half-wedge shots, you can increase your distance control and accuracy on these challenging shots.

In order to achieve better results with half-wedge shots, it is important to maintain a unified movement of the hands, arms, and body throughout the swing. Focus on rotating your body as if you were swinging an 8-iron, rather than trying to control the shot solely with your hands. By allowing your body to lead the swing and guiding your hands and arms through the motion, you can improve the consistency of your contact and distance control on these shorter shots.

While it may be challenging to change your approach to half-wedge shots, practicing drills like the beach towel exercise can help you develop a more effective swing technique. By incorporating more body rotation and unity between your hands and arms, you can create a more reliable and repeatable swing on these challenging shots. Remember to focus on keeping your body rotating throughout the swing and allow your hands and arms to follow the natural movement of your torso for improved results.

Overall, improving your pivot and technique on half-wedge shots can lead to better distance control, accuracy, and consistency in your short game. By blending the movement of your hands and arms with the rotation of your body, you can ensure more solid contact with the ball and eliminate common errors like hitting it fat or thin. Practice drills like the beach towel exercise to develop a unified swing motion and focus on maintaining body rotation throughout your swing to see improvements in your half-wedge shots on the golf course.
