Fixing 3 Common Mental Mistakes While on the Golf Course

Understanding how to think like the best players in the world can significantly improve our performance on the golf course. However, sports psychologist Dr. Bhrett McCabe points out common mental mistakes that many golfers make that hinder their scores. In a Golf Digest Happy Hour webinar, McCabe discusses the concept of capability and capacity, highlighting the importance of focusing on what you have rather than what is missing. Many players struggle to take their range game to the course because they are fixated on finding the missing 22 percent of their abilities.

McCabe emphasizes the need for players to shift their focus to what they are capable of on a given day. Rather than constantly trying to adjust their swing to find a groove, players should make adjustments based on the percentage of their abilities that they have access to. The best players on tour understand this concept and focus on maximizing their potential with the tools they have available. By downshifting and making strategic decisions, players can adapt to their current capabilities and perform at their best.

One interesting observation highlighted by McCabe is the difference in putting performance between par putts and birdie putts. Research shows that players tend to miss birdie putts short due to a fear of three-putting. By understanding the psychology behind these tendencies, players can make more confident decisions on the green. Learning to approach birdie putts with the same mindset as par putts can help golfers overcome this mental barrier and improve their chances of making more birdies on the course.

Another key aspect of mental performance in golf is managing emotions on the first tee. It’s common for players to feel pressure to get off to a good start, but it’s important to acknowledge these feelings and let them pass. By focusing on a clear target and verbalizing the shot you want to hit, players can stay connected to their process and perform more consistently. Instead of trying to suppress emotions, embrace them and channel them into productive energy that can help you succeed on the course.
