The Ping i240 Iron: A Fresh Take on an Iconic Line

Hey there, fellow golfers! Today, we’re diving into the latest from Ping – the i240 iron. If you’re anything like me, every time a brand pulls the wraps off a new iron, you’re both excited and a bit anxious. Let’s be real: there’s a delicate balance between tweaking what’s already fantastic and straying too far from what made it great. The Ping i210 and i230 were big hits on tour and among everyday golfers alike, so I couldn’t wait to see if the i240 could keep that momentum going. Buckle up; we’re on this ride together!

Tech Talk: What’s New in the i240?

First up, let’s chat about tech. Ping has put a lot of thought into making this iron lighter and better at launching the ball. They’ve introduced a multi-material cavity badge that’s 8.5 grams lighter than what you’d find in the i230. This redesign lets them position the weight lower, which in turn enhances launch conditions and boosts the MOI (Moment of Inertia, for those of you not in the techie zone). Behind that badge, there’s an activated elastomer insert that serves two main purposes: it supports the face for better energy transfer (which translates to higher ball speeds) and also gives a sweet feel and sound at impact.

Spin Control: Fewer Grooves, More Precision

Now, when it comes to the face of the club, there have been some major changes since the i230 iteration. Ping opted for fewer grooves that are spaced further apart, and this is a direct response to feedback from their tour pros. They want higher spin rates when you’re hitting from the fairway, but less spin when you’re in the rough. I still scratch my head a little on the latter point, but I get it: consistency leads to predictable ball flight.

The Sole: Tried and True Design

Moving to the sole, there’s not much change here. The rounded leading edge and high bounce have made a return, both of which were loved in previous models. These features give you the ability to glide through the turf, which is something every golfer craves. If you’ve played the i210 or i230, you’ll feel right at home.

Eyes Up: Visual Appeal

Here’s where things get subjective. The i240 has a fresh look, and it’s definitely a contrast from the cleaner, more minimalist vibe of the i230. Personally, I find the carbon effect badge a bit over the top, and I’m not a huge fan of the shift to red branding. But hey, looks are in the eye of the beholder, and many of you may prefer this modern twist.

Sit Tight: Confidence at Address

When you get the i240 down at address, it’s an absolute confidence booster. Very few irons strike such a perfect balance. The blade length is just right for low-handicap players, but the dimensions still make it approachable for mid-handicaps. The progressive offset is a nice touch, and it just sits beautifully inviting you to take a swing.

Performance: Hitting All the Right Notes

Now, let’s get down to business: how does it actually perform? I’ve got to say, Ping really nailed it with the i240. Softer feel? Check. Higher launch? Check. Improved spin consistency? Double-check! Everything they aimed for is there, and they’ve managed to keep the characteristics that made the i line a favorite among golfers.

Fitting: A Customized Experience

I had the opportunity to get fitted for these beauties at Ping’s headquarters in Phoenix, and let me tell you – it was an enlightening experience! From the first hit, I was blown away by how soft they felt. The design of the sole didn’t change much, which was comforting because I love that turf interaction. The surprising launch angle was something new for me, and I could definitely get used to that higher ball flight.

Weather the Storm: Hydropearl 2.0 Finish

I should mention that testing these clubs in Phoenix during June might not give a clear picture of wet performance. However, knowing about the Hydropearl 2.0 finish’s reputation for retaining spin gave me peace of mind. If you’ve faced rainy days on the course, this is a feature to appreciate.

Conclusion: The Best of Both Worlds

The i240 is a versatile iron that caters to a wide range of golfer profiles. Whether you’re a high-speed player looking for workability or a less-experienced golfer seeking stability and a high launch, this iron fits like a glove. It’s a strong contender that could help mid handicappers lower their scores and accompany them through their golfing journey.

Final Thoughts

So should you drop some cash for the i240? If you’re after performance, feel, and a touch of flair, this iron is worth a serious look. With a range of customizable options, including various color codes and shaft choices, you’ll find it hard not to find the perfect setup. Get ready to elevate your game with the Ping i240 iron!

And there you have it, folks! Hope this breakdown helps you in making that all-important decision about your next set of irons. Happy swinging!
