Assessing the form of the stars as they approach Augusta

The 2025 Masters is just around the corner, and as the PGA Tour’s Florida Swing comes to an end, some key players are getting into gear while others are still trying to find their footing. Rory McIlroy is one player who is firing on all cylinders, with two wins in five starts leading up to the Masters. McIlroy’s new mindset and improved course management have helped him secure victories at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Players Championship, setting him up as a favorite for the upcoming major.

McIlroy’s recent success is a testament to his growth as a player, with improvements in his overall game evident in his statistics. While he has historically relied heavily on his driver, McIlroy’s strokes gained data this season show a more well-rounded player, with significant gains coming from his approach play and putting. This evolution in McIlroy’s game has positioned him as a top contender for the green jacket at Augusta.

On the other hand, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is still working to get back to full strength after a hand injury sidelined him earlier in the year. Despite showing flashes of his former self with three top-11 finishes, Scheffler has openly expressed frustrations with his game and his short game, in particular, lags behind his usual standards. As he continues to work on his game ahead of the Masters, Scheffler’s performance at the Texas Children’s Houston Open will be crucial in determining his readiness for Augusta.

Xander Schauffele and Jordan Spieth are two other players still searching for their old form as they prepare for the Masters. Schauffele, coming off a rib injury, has struggled to find his swing feel, while Spieth has been working to eliminate bad habits from his offseason wrist surgery. Both players have shown glimpses of their potential, but consistency will be key as they aim to make an impact at Augusta.

In contrast, players like Ludvig Aberg, Collin Morikawa, and Justin Thomas are riding high with recent successes on the tour. Morikawa, in particular, has two runner-up finishes this season and ranks first in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green, making him a strong contender for a win in the near future. As the Masters approaches, these players will be ones to watch on the leaderboard.

On the flip side, players like Wyndham Clark, Tony Finau, and Max Homa are facing challenges as they struggle to regain their top form. Clark, dealing with a neck issue, has been vocal about his struggles to recapture his game, while Finau and Homa have yet to find consistency in their performances this season. As they continue to work on their games, the Masters will be a test of their resilience and determination.

Overall, the 2025 Masters is shaping up to be an exciting event with top players like Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Joaquin Niemann, Tyrrell Hatton, and Sergio Garcia all vying for the green jacket. With the competition heating up on the tour and players fine-tuning their games ahead of Augusta, golf fans can expect an exhilarating tournament with plenty of twists and turns on the leaderboard. The stage is set for a memorable Masters as the world’s best golfers chase the coveted title at Augusta National.
