Brooks Koepka made history at the 2024 LIV Golf Greenbrier event by winning his fifth title on the three-year-old circuit. His victory came after a final-round 7-under 63 at The Old White Course at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. This was Koepka’s second win of the season, with his previous victory coming at the LIV Golf event in Singapore in May. He outlasted Richard Bland, Jason Kokrak, and Jon Rahm for the win, with Rahm being the 36-hole leader after shooting an 8-under 62 in the second round.
Despite Rahm’s strong performance, he shot a final-round 5-under 65, leading to a playoff with Koepka. Koepka ultimately secured the win with a par, adding another title to his impressive resume. Rahm had previously won the last LIV event in the UK. Koepka’s victory came with a hefty prize of $4 million, and he will also split the $3 million team prize with his Smash GC teammates. Graeme McDowell, one of Koepka’s teammates, was suspended for one event for violating LIV Golf’s anti-doping policy.
During the tournament, LIV Golf witnessed its first albatross when Brendan Steele holed his second shot from 285 yards at the par-5 17th with a 4-wood. This shot also holds the record for the longest holed shot in LIV Golf history. Steele recounted his experience, mentioning that he did not see the ball go in but was aiming for an aggressive play to give himself a chance for a birdie. The shot landed softly and unexpectedly rolled into the hole, leading to a memorable moment for the golfer.
Koepka’s victory at the Greenbrier event solidifies his position as one of the top players on the LIV circuit, showcasing his skill and consistency in high-pressure situations. His strategic play and mental fortitude were on full display as he navigated tough competition to emerge victorious. With his fifth win, Koepka continues to leave a lasting impact on the LIV Golf circuit and the sport as a whole. His achievements serve as inspiration for aspiring golfers and fans worldwide, highlighting the rewards of dedication, perseverance, and talent in the competitive world of professional golf.
