Brooks Koepka Seeks PGA Tour Reinstatement Following LIV Golf Departure

Brooks Koepka’s Pathway Back to the PGA Tour

Professional golfer Brooks Koepka is officially on the road to rejoining the PGA Tour after a high-profile stint with LIV Golf. The five-time major champion recently applied for reinstatement of his PGA Tour membership, as reported by ESPN’s Mark Schlabach. This move comes three weeks following his departure from LIV Golf, where he had emerged as one of its biggest and best-compensated stars.

The Complexity of Koepka’s Return

The specifics of Koepka’s reintegration into the PGA Tour remain ambiguous. Historically, the Tour has indicated that players returning from LIV Golf would need to sit out for at least a year following their last non-sanctioned event. Given that LIV’s last event in 2025 concluded on August 25, it suggests that Koepka could be sidelined from the PGA until September of this year.

However, this timeline may not be final. Reports indicate that the PGA Tour is set to commence its reinstatement and disciplinary process, which will involve "thoughtful input from the board, including player directors."

Insights from Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy, a former player director for the PGA Tour and a vocal critic of LIV Golf, recently expressed that players in Koepka’s situation should not face penalties upon their return. McIlroy stated, “They’ve made the money, but they’ve paid their consequences when you talk about their reputation and some of the things that they’ve lost by going over there. If it made the overall tour stronger to have Bryson DeChambeau back and whoever else, I would be okay with it.” He emphasized that the decision should involve collective input from PGA Tour members.

Major Championship Status

Regardless of the PGA’s decisions, Koepka remains eligible to compete in all four major tournaments in 2023, thanks to his victory at the PGA Championship. He also has the option to participate in events on the DP World Tour.

Koepka’s Regret and Future Aspirations

Koepka was among several prominent golfers, including Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, and Phil Mickelson, who transitioned to LIV Golf three years ago. However, Koepka seems to be experiencing regret over his lucrative decision. Reflecting on his circumstances at the 2023 Masters, he lamented his inability to regularly compete against top competitors, remarking, “It is what it is. It’s the situation we’ve got right now, so I can’t do anything about it. I just go play.”

Last year, responding to speculation about his potential return to the PGA Tour, Koepka acknowledged, “I’ve got a contract obligation out here to fulfill, and then we’ll see what happens.”

Performance Drop and Future Prospects

The transition to LIV Golf has impacted Koepka’s standing, causing him to drop to 244th in the Official World Golf Ranking. Once renowned for his performance in major tournaments, he has shown concerning trends; although he won the PGA Championship in 2023, he has not placed in the top 10 in the ten events following that victory and missed the cut in three of the four majors in 2025.

Officially parting ways with LIV Golf in December, the league referred to the split as amicable, with Koepka opting to “prioritize the needs of his family and stay closer to home.”

As Brooks Koepka sets his sights back on the PGA Tour, the golf community eagerly anticipates his next steps and potential resurgence on the links.
