Collin Morikawa responds to pro’s harsh putting criticism

The AimPoint putting technique has become increasingly popular among PGA Tour players, with top players like Collin Morikawa adopting the strategy to improve their putting game. However, not everyone is a fan of this green-reading technique. Former U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover recently argued that AimPoint should be banned, citing concerns about slow play on the golf course.

Morikawa, on the other hand, disagrees with Glover’s criticism of AimPoint. In a press conference ahead of the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines, Morikawa suggested that if AimPoint were to be banned, long putters should also be prohibited. He pointed out that long putters have also faced controversy in the past due to the anchoring technique, which was banned by the USGA and R&A in 2016.

Glover’s main argument against AimPoint is that it does not statistically improve players’ performance and contributes to slower pace of play. He also described the technique as inconsiderate of other players, particularly due to the process of testing the green slope with their feet near the hole. Despite these criticisms, Morikawa defended AimPoint, stating that it has significantly helped his putting game and enhanced his ability to read putts accurately.

Morikawa acknowledged that AimPoint can potentially slow down play if not done correctly, but he believes that the criticism of the technique stems from a lack of understanding. He emphasized the importance of players being aware of their pace of play and respecting other players on the course. Ultimately, Morikawa believes that the benefits of AimPoint outweigh any potential drawbacks, especially in terms of improving putting accuracy.

As the debate between Morikawa and Glover continues, the discussion around AimPoint and its impact on the game of golf persists. While some players, like Morikawa, credit the technique for enhancing their putting skills, others, like Glover, remain skeptical about its effectiveness and its potential to disrupt the flow of play on the course. With both players competing at the Genesis Invitational, the clash of opinions on AimPoint may come to a head on the greens of Torrey Pines’ South Course.
