How Ludvig Aberg crafted one of the best swings in golf using this indoor drill

Ludvig Aberg is a successful professional golfer known for his top-5 world ranking and PGA Tour win, but he is most admired for his exceptional swing. His simple and efficient swing style has garnered attention as he nearly won the 2024 Masters and was a leader at the U.S. Open. Despite growing up in a cold town in Sweden, Aberg developed a technically sound swing that excels in driving and ball-striking.

Aberg credits a childhood drill for helping him address common swing issues like early extension and lack of shaft lean. As a junior golfer, he struggled with early extension, causing his hips to move towards the ball and resulting in inaccurate shots. To combat this, he used a chair drill at home where he maintained pressure against the chair with his butt throughout the swing. This helped him maintain proper posture and avoid early extension tendencies.

In addition to early extension, Aberg also worked on improving his impact position and forward shaft lean. He incorporated a club or object in his pre-swing routine to ensure his hands were in front of the impact line. By rehearsing this movement and driving his hands forward to hit the club, he was able to create more shaft lean and compress his irons better. This drill is beneficial for amateurs who struggle with releasing their hands too early in the downswing.

Aberg emphasizes the importance of maintaining pressure on the left toes during the transition, as it promotes an inside path and generates power through ground force. This feeling of pressure shifting from the right heel to the left toes helps in eliminating hip thrusts towards the ball in the downswing. By focusing on this aspect, Aberg was able to improve his swing mechanics and enhance his performance on the course.

Overall, Aberg’s dedication to refining his swing through drills and practice sessions has led to significant improvements in his game. His focus on correcting common swing issues and developing proper mechanics has contributed to his success as a professional golfer. By incorporating his go-to drill at home to fix early extension and create more shaft lean, golfers can benefit from Aberg’s expertise and enhance their own swing mechanics for improved performance on the course.
