Atthaya Thitikul: The Rising Star of Women’s Golf

FRISCO, Texas — At the young age of 22, Atthaya "Jeeno" Thitikul has already established herself as a formidable force within the world of women’s golf. Ranked No. 2 in the world, she boasts an impressive resume that includes five career wins, 47 top-10 finishes, and a staggering $11 million in total earnings. Remarkably, in 2022, Thitikul became one of the youngest golfers alongside Lydia Ko to reach the coveted No. 1 ranking in the world. However, as she stands at the precipice of a career-defining moment, a pressing question looms large: when will she achieve a major breakthrough?

Thitikul’s Performance in Major Championships

Throughout her burgeoning career, Thitikul has recorded seven top-10 finishes in major championships. These results highlight her undeniable talent, yet the young golfer has yet to fully capitalize on her potential when it matters most. Since her standout performance at last year’s Chevron Championship, where she momentarily led before faltering with scores of 72-76, Thitikul has struggled to find herself in contention at major events. Her last five starts in these prestigious tournaments have seen her finish outside the top 10, including disappointing missed cuts at the 2024 Evian Championship and this year’s U.S. Women’s Open held at Erin Hills.

The Weight of Major Championships

Major tournaments are a defining aspect of a golfer’s career. For players still on their ascent, the heightened expectations can feel overwhelming. The longer it takes for a young talent to secure a major win, the more burdensome the pressure becomes. For Thitikul, the question of "When will I win a major?" is likely a thought that crosses her mind frequently. Yet, one thing is clear—she carries a rare sense of perspective that may serve her well in high-pressure situations.

A Refreshing Perspective on Pressure

As she prepares for the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Fields Ranch East in PGA Frisco, Thitikul exudes a sense of calm, rooted in her unique outlook on golf and life. "Every major, I just want to make the cut, to be honest," she reflected during a recent interview. "It would be amazing to win it, and I understand that it’s a dream for many. But at this moment, I’m content with what I have achieved. If a win comes, fantastic; if not, I have no regrets."

Embracing Opportunity, Not Regret

Earlier this year, at the Chevron Championship, Thitikul pointed to her youth and early career stage as reasons for her current lack of major championship success. "I see it as a challenge, not a stress," she noted. "I know I’m still young, and many opportunities will come my way." Her ability to reflect on her journey instead of dwelling on what has yet to be achieved is a hallmark of her mindset. "If I don’t win a major by the end of my career, will I be regretting it? No, I’ll focus on giving my all and let things unfold naturally."

The Journey from Ratchaburi, Thailand

Thitikul’s journey to becoming a leading figure in women’s golf started far from the professional spotlight. Growing up in a small town in Ratchaburi, Thailand, which lacked a dedicated golf course, her passion for the game was ignited by her grandfather. His encouragement steered Thitikul toward honing her skills, which became instrumental as she climbed the competitive ranks of the sport. Now, her success not only represents personal achievement but also serves her overarching goal of providing financial stability for her family.

Financial Freedom Fuels Success

Thitikul credits her exceptional career earnings for allowing her to approach major tournaments with a more relaxed mindset. "It definitely helps to not fixate on making cuts or worrying about money," she mentioned. For many athletes, financial concerns can weigh heavily on performance, but for Thitikul, the pressure seems less daunting. This freedom, combined with her youthful enthusiasm, allows her to tackle challenges without the anxieties typically associated with top-level competition.

Youthful Fearlessness

At 22, Thitikul is still relatively unencumbered by the fears that come with greater experience. The “fear of failure” that often infiltrates the minds of older competitors is less established in her psyche. This attitude is further buoyed by the knowledge that her career is just beginning, with countless opportunities still ahead. For athletes of her caliber, this mindset can often yield the best results, especially in high-stakes tournaments.

Facing Expectations Head-On

Regardless of how unpressured Thitikul may feel, the expectations surrounding her are ever-present. The world of professional sports is unforgiving, and the weight of expectations is a reality that accompanies substantial talent. As she prepares to tee off alongside notable players like Nelly Korda and Lydia Ko, Thitikul will carry her unique perspective on major success—a blend of hope, acceptance, and a willingness to embrace whatever unfolds.

A Journey of Discovery and Growth

As the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship approaches, all eyes will be on Thitikul, who stands at the convergence of opportunity and expectation. How she navigates this moment may very well influence her trajectory in professional golf. With the fearless spirit of youth and a grounded sense of achievement, Atthaya Thitikul is not just a golfer to watch; she is a burgeoning icon destined for greatness. Whether she claims a major championship title this week or not, her journey continues to inspire both fans and aspiring athletes worldwide. The future looks bright for this exceptional talent, and it’s clear—her best is still yet to come.
