Lexi Thompson’s Lesson: Mastering the Punch Shot in Windy Conditions

Lexi Thompson, a LPGA star with a successful career, shared her tips for playing golf in windy conditions during a GOLF cover shoot. Thompson, who is gearing up to compete on her seventh U.S. Solheim Cup team, emphasized the importance of making adjustments to achieve more solid contact in challenging wind conditions. She provided three key adjustments to help players execute a lower, penetrating ball flight when faced with windy weather.

Firstly, Thompson recommended adjusting the grip on the club by gripping up slightly to hit a controlled shot. Secondly, she advised players to position the ball further back in their stance, rather than in the middle or up front. Lastly, Thompson suggested using a longer swing length, but not over-swinging, to reduce spin and keep the ball lower and more controlled. She demonstrated hitting the shot with an 8-iron, which is typically her 150- to 155-yard club.

Thompson highlighted the importance of not trying to hit the ball harder in windy conditions, but instead using a nice, even tempo with a shorter-than-normal swing. Paying attention to the wind direction and giving yourself an aiming cushion on the target are crucial in executing a successful shot in the wind. When attempting to apply Thompson’s tips, the result was a natural feeling shot with a lower, more penetrating ball flight and no distance loss after just one swing.

As a master instructor, Thompson continues to add to her list of accomplishments on the golf course. Her expertise in playing in windy conditions and her ability to convey effective tips for success make her a valuable resource for golfers looking to improve their game. Whether competing in professional tournaments or sharing her knowledge with fellow players, Thompson’s skills and insights are invaluable for anyone looking to enhance their golf game, especially when faced with challenging weather conditions.

Growing up in South Florida, Thompson developed a strong foundation for playing in the wind, which has translated into success on the golf course throughout her career. Her experience and expertise in maneuvering difficult conditions make her a respected figure in the golfing community. As she continues to compete and share her knowledge with others, Thompson’s impact on the sport will undoubtedly continue to inspire and influence golfers of all levels around the world.
