Golf gear technology has been focused on reducing spin for the past few years, with low-spin driver heads, balls, and shafts all designed to maximize distance. However, a shift is occurring on the Tour, with players realizing the importance of spin on approach shots and wedges for control and precision. Some players are making changes to their gear to bring spin back into their game, focusing on achieving the right balance between low spin off the tee and higher spin for approach shots and wedges. These adjustments can make a significant impact on a player’s ability to hold greens and make crucial shots in challenging conditions.

One significant change players are making is switching to golf balls with more spin, such as the Pro V1 or Pro V1x, rather than ultra-low spin balls. While this may sacrifice a few yards off the tee, the increase in spin and control is worth the trade-off, especially in high-pressure situations on the Tour. Additionally, players are gravitating towards driver heads with more neutral CGs and moving weights to the rear of the head to increase launch and spin. Fairway and hybrid clubs are also being adjusted to add spin, with Ping fairway woods being a popular choice due to their spin and control capabilities.

Shaft tweaks are also being made, with players opting for softer, higher-launch options to increase spin in their irons, hybrids, and 3-woods. Adjustments to loft and lie angles are being made throughout the bag to bring spin and launch into an optimal window, leading to more playable trajectories and scoring opportunities. Fresh grooves and wedge setups are essential for generating spin, with many pros swapping out wedges frequently to ensure consistent spin and control, especially in challenging conditions.

Overall, the goal for players is to manage spin effectively, balancing low spin off the tee for distance with higher spin on approach shots and wedges for control. By making strategic adjustments to their gear and understanding the importance of spin, players can improve their performance in critical moments on the course. Finding the right balance between spin and distance can make a significant impact on a player’s ability to score well and compete at the highest level in professional golf.
