The new Opus line of wedges from Callaway has been in the works for about two years, with input from PGA TOUR players. The design process was aimed at understanding what the best players in the world look for in a wedge, including factors such as the look at address, the shape of the leading edge, how the club sits on the ground with the face open, and more. The team at Callaway put a strong emphasis on getting feedback from Tour players to ensure that the final product met their high standards.
One of the biggest challenges in designing the Opus wedges was perfecting the shape of the wedge at address. Callaway spent countless hours gathering feedback and testing from Tour players to ensure that the shape was appealing to the majority of players. The sixth and final prototype of the Opus wedge, known as ‘S6’, was based on the feedback received from players throughout the design process. This final version of the wedge represents the culmination of all the input and testing from the Tour players who were involved in its development.
The Opus wedges are designed to be tour-inspired and tour-driven, with the PGA TOUR players playing a significant role in shaping the final product. The team at Callaway worked closely with players to address their specific needs and preferences, from the shaping and roundness of the wedge to the sound and feel at impact. Each aspect of the wedge was carefully considered to ensure that it met the high standards of elite players on the PGA TOUR.
Callaway tour manager Joe Toulon emphasized the importance of the shape of the wedge at address, as it is one of the first things that players notice when setting up a shot. The shape of the wedge at address, as well as how it looks when the face is opened, were key areas of focus during the design process. The Opus wedges were designed to not only look appealing to the eye but also perform exceptionally well on the course, providing players with the confidence they need to execute precise shots.
The Opus wedges are the result of extensive research and development by the Callaway team, with a focus on meeting the needs and preferences of PGA TOUR players. The final versions of the wedges are based on the feedback received from players throughout the prototyping and design process, with the sixth prototype ultimately being selected as the basis for the production models. The Opus wedges represent the collaboration between Callaway and Tour players, resulting in a high-performance wedge that meets the exacting standards of elite golfers.
