4 Things to Consider When Building a Backyard Putting Green

Building a backyard putting green may be a dream for many golfers, but it requires time, money, and expertise to make it a reality. While some may attempt to create one themselves, it is usually a project best left to the professionals. Before embarking on this endeavor, there are several important decisions that need to be made. These decisions can be guided by the guidelines laid out in a recent article in the USGA’s Green Section Record.

One of the first decisions to make when building a backyard putting green is whether to use real grass or synthetic turf. While real grass may be appealing to some due to its authenticity, it requires significant maintenance and can be expensive to keep in golf-able conditions. Synthetic turf, on the other hand, is more cost-effective and easier to install. It requires minimal upkeep and can be a practical choice for many homeowners.

The location of the putting green is another important consideration. Factors such as sunlight exposure, water source, climate, terrain slope, soil quality, and drainage need to be taken into account. The size of the green also matters, with backyard putting greens typically being smaller than those on golf courses. The cost of building a putting green can vary depending on the region and construction materials, with bentgrass greens typically costing around $18 to $20 per square foot.

When designing the putting green, you have the option to get creative with features such as undulations or work with a narrow space. Synthetic turf can make maintenance easier but may limit flexibility with hole locations. It is essential to consider all these factors before starting the construction process to ensure that the end result meets your expectations.

Overall, building a backyard putting green is a significant investment, both in terms of time and money. By carefully considering factors such as turf choice, location, size, cost, and design features, you can create a putting green that suits your needs and preferences. Whether you choose real grass or synthetic turf, the end result can provide hours of enjoyment and practice opportunities right in your own backyard.
