Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, located in Gainesville, Virginia, is set to host the 2024 Solheim Cup, where top female professional golfers from the United States and Europe will compete. Designed by the legendary golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., the club is considered his masterpiece. Jones Sr. was smitten by the land alongside Lake Manassas, approximately 40 miles west of Washington, D.C., in the early 1970s and set about acquiring parcels of land to create his vision for the course.

The club has a rich history of hosting prestigious events, including the inaugural Presidents Cup in 1994 and subsequent iterations in 1996, 2000, and 2005. It also hosted the PGA Tour’s Quicken Loans National in 2015. Despite its storied past, Robert Trent Jones Golf Club is not a typical country club, lacking amenities such as swimming pools, tennis courts, and other recreational facilities. It caters to serious golfers with a focus on the game itself.

Among the club’s approximately 400 members are high-profile individuals, including basketball legend Michael Jordan and former U.S. President Barack Obama. Jordan is known for playing high-stakes matches at the club, while Obama maintains a low profile during his visits, often playing late in the afternoon with discreet Secret Service agents. Another former President, Bill Clinton, still maintains a locker at the club, showcasing the club’s prestigious membership.

The club’s clubhouse menu features the Robert Trent Jones burger, a signature dish that combines ground beef and sausage. The course itself is known for its brawny design, with long forced carries and challenging greens guarded by bunkers. The course will be shortened for the Solheim Cup, providing a unique setting for match-play drama. Lake Manassas plays a prominent role on the back nine, adding an element of intensity to the course, particularly on holes that feature water hazards and strategic shot placement.

With its impressive design, rich history of hosting prominent events, and high-profile members, Robert Trent Jones Golf Club is an iconic destination for golf enthusiasts. The club’s focus on the game of golf and its challenging layout make it a standout venue for competitive play. As the 2024 Solheim Cup approaches, the club is poised to showcase its excellence on a global stage, solidifying its reputation as one of the premier golf destinations in the United States.
