The Rising Popularity of the Fitz Grip on the Tour: Discover Why Players are Embracing this Putting Technique

The latest trend in putting grips on the golf course seems to be the use of an extended left finger grip, commonly referred to as the “Fitz Grip.” Traditionally, most golfers use a reverse-overlap grip, curling their lead finger over the pinky and ring fingers of their right hand. However, more players are starting to extend the lead finger of their lead hand straight down the grip, like Matt Fitzpatrick and Matt Wallace. This grip locks the putter into the left palm, allowing for better control and alignment of the putter.

The main benefit of the Fitz Grip is that it promotes better putter face control by firming up the lead wrist and reducing hinging. This grip also brings both hands and wrist joints closer together, promoting a more neutral forearm plane. By activating the extensor muscles in the left forearm, the grip helps prevent wrist breakdown and ensures that the left hand is in control of the putting stroke. This can help prevent pulling putts and improve consistency on the green.

The Fitz Grip has been gaining popularity on the tour, with several players adopting this technique. The grip allows for various modifications with the right hand, such as using a claw grip or clasping the right hand. Ultimately, the right hand serves as a support system for the left hand, which is the driving force behind the stroke. This flexibility in the right hand grip allows players to find what is most comfortable for them while still benefiting from the stability of the left hand grip.

Overall, the Fitz Grip offers golfers a new perspective on putting technique and can help improve their performance on the green. By locking the putter into the left palm and promoting better alignment and control, golfers can experience increased consistency and accuracy with their putting stroke. Whether using a traditional grip or experimenting with new techniques like the Fitz Grip, finding what works best for your game is key to success on the golf course. So give it a try and see if the Fitz Grip can help elevate your putting game to the next level.
