Pros give their opinions on the redesigned 16th hole at Memorial: Is it an improvement?

Jack and Barbara Nicklaus received mixed reviews from PGA Tour players regarding the redesigned par 3 16th hole at Muirfield Village Golf Club. The hole, which has been criticized over the years, forced golfers to draw or fade the ball into a narrow green surrounded by water and bunkers. Some players, like Jordan Spieth, acknowledged that the changes made by Nicklaus improved the hole, while others, including Jason Day, still found it challenging and even described it as a “stupid hole.”

The 16th hole has a history of controversy, with players voicing their displeasure about its difficulty and length. Even George Archer once complained that no par 3 should be longer than 200 yards. Nicklaus took the feedback seriously and made adjustments to the hole by moving the tee and removing a bunker, making it more playable for the professionals. Despite the changes, the firmness of the green remains a challenge, as shots that land past the first 20 feet may bounce off.

PGA Tour players like Sahith Theegala and Collin Morikawa praised the alterations made by Nicklaus, noting that the changes have made the hole more manageable. Theegala mentioned that the new angle allows players to hit draws onto the green, giving them a chance to score better on the hole. Morikawa also highlighted the impact of removing the front-right bunker, making it easier for players to navigate around the green.

Xander Schauffele agreed with his fellow players, noting that the adjustments have made the 16th hole more fair and accessible for scoring opportunities. The removal of the bunker has provided players with the option to be more defensive or aggressive based on their game plan. Players are now able to target more front pins, utilizing the newfound space to land their shots closer to the hole.

Overall, the redesign of the 16th hole at Muirfield Village Golf Club has generated a mix of reactions from PGA Tour players, with some acknowledging the improvements made by Jack Nicklaus and others still finding it challenging. Despite the changes, the firmness of the green remains a factor in scoring on the hole. Players like Sahith Theegala, Collin Morikawa, and Xander Schauffele have appreciated the modifications, finding the hole more playable and fair. The adjustments made by Nicklaus have improved the overall experience for professionals competing at the Memorial Tournament and highlighted the importance of evolving course designs to meet the demands of today’s players.
