As the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst approaches, golfers are gearing up to navigate the challenging terrain of the course, which includes baked-out slopes that demand precision. To help players better understand how to use the ground to their advantage, a daily Ground Game series is being launched. This series will provide daily articles with valuable tips and insights for mastering the unique challenges of the course.

One of the key challenges that golfers will face at Pinehurst No. 2 is the abundance of sand shots due to natural areas and vast bunker complexes. The sand at Pinehurst varies in firmness, requiring players to adjust their stance and swing accordingly. Understanding how to approach different bunker shots based on the firmness of the sand is crucial for success on the course.

When faced with packed-sand lies, which are common on linksy or dried-out courses, golfers need to adapt their downswing to prevent the club from bouncing off the surface and sending the ball over the green. A steeper downswing is required for these shots, along with setting more weight into the front knee and leaning the shaft slightly toward the target. This technique helps increase stability and allows for a digging action to make solid contact with the sand just behind the ball.

On the other hand, fluffy-sand lies present a different challenge, requiring a different approach to achieve success. To effectively navigate fluffy sand lies, golfers should avoid digging in too much with their feet and instead play the ball a couple of inches forward in their stance. Setting the club’s shaft more perpendicular to the ground and keeping the face slightly open will allow the club to skim through the sand and splash the ball out, requiring more speed and commitment to a full shot.

For both packed-sand and fluffy-sand lies, mastering the proper technique and swing adjustments is essential for achieving success on the challenging terrain of Pinehurst No. 2. By understanding how to adapt to different bunker conditions and using the ground to their advantage, golfers can improve their performance and navigate the course with confidence. Stay tuned for more tips and insights from the daily Ground Game series to prepare for the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst.
