New Black Desert golf course in Utah makes impressive debut on Golfweek’s Best rankings

Building a golf course in a lava field is no easy task, as architect Phil Smith discovered when he and Tom Weiskopf took on the challenge of designing Black Desert Resort in Utah. The site had been a source of speculation and investment for years, but no golf course had been built until Smith and Weiskopf jumped at the opportunity. Despite the rugged terrain and ankle-breaking lava fields, they were determined to create a unique golfing experience that would stand out in the industry.
The volcanic history of the area near Ivins, where the golf course is located, dates back millions of years, with the latest eruption occurring 32,000 years ago. The site for Black Desert Resort looked more like Hawaii than Utah, with promise of a stunning golf course set against a backdrop of desert and mountains. Smith and Weiskopf’s vision included wide fairways to accommodate the unpredictable winds and to provide golfers with strategic options while playing the course.
Weiskopf, a hands-on architect known for his dedication to his projects, was 76 years old when he took on the challenge of designing Black Desert Resort. Despite the difficult terrain, he walked every inch of the site with Smith, providing invaluable insight and attention to detail. The routing of the course was carefully planned to take advantage of the natural landscape while providing a challenging yet fair experience for golfers of all skill levels.
With dozens of potential sites for holes, Smith and Weiskopf had to carefully select the best locations to create a cohesive and challenging 18-hole course. The resort’s plans did not include any neighborhoods or roads within the course, allowing the architects to focus solely on the integrity of the routing. This decision provided long views across the neighboring town and residential areas, enhancing the overall experience for golfers.
Despite the challenges of building a golf course in a lava field, Smith and Weiskopf were determined to create something truly special at Black Desert Resort. Their attention to detail and dedication to the project paid off, resulting in a unique and breathtaking golf course that blends seamlessly into the natural landscape. Golfers of all skill levels can enjoy the wide fairways, strategic options, and stunning views that Black Desert Resort has to offer. With its rugged terrain and volcanic history, this course is a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of its architects.
