Living in Westchester County may seem like a dream for golfers, but the reality is, there are limited options for public golf courses in the area. Despite being close to some of the most prestigious private clubs in the country, the number of nearby municipal courses is lacking, and the options for publicly accessible courses are few. Getting a tee time at these courses has become increasingly difficult, especially since the surge in interest in golf during the Covid pandemic. While it’s great to see the game growing, it would be even better if the public course options grew along with it.

Residents of Westchester County have the option to purchase a three-year pass for the six public courses run by the county. Hudson Hills, the newest and most expensive option, tends to attract serious golfers due to its higher green fees and better pace of play. However, the course has some challenging environmental areas that can affect gameplay. The other county-run courses may not offer the same level of conditioning and layouts as Hudson Hills, and pace of play can be an issue at times.

In addition to the county-run courses, there are other public golf course options in the surrounding areas. Richter Park and Centennial are solid choices to the north of Westchester County, while Van Cortlandt Park Golf Course and Split Rock and Pelham Bay are located just south in the Bronx. These courses offer varying levels of difficulty and amenities, but may not make the cut as top favorites for some golfers in the area.

For the author, the top five public courses within an hour’s drive from their home include The Links at Union Vale in Lagrangeville, Pound Ridge Golf Club, Great River Golf Club in Milford, The Golf Club at Mansion Ridge in Monroe, and Griffith E. Harris in Greenwich. Each of these courses offers a unique golfing experience, from challenging layouts to stunning views and top-notch facilities. Travel time and reliability were key factors in selecting these courses, as convenience played a significant role for the author as a father of young children.

The Links at Union Vale, Pound Ridge Golf Club, Great River Golf Club, The Golf Club at Mansion Ridge, and Griffith E. Harris each have their own attributes that set them apart as favorite public courses. From the layout and design to the overall golfing experience, these courses offer something special for golfers in the Tri-state area. While some courses may be more challenging or require advance booking due to popularity, each course provides an opportunity for golfers to enjoy the game and improve their skills.

In conclusion, the public golf course options in the Westchester County area may be limited, but there are still some hidden gems to discover within a reasonable driving distance. Whether you’re looking for a challenging course like Pound Ridge Golf Club or a more relaxed setting like Griffith E. Harris, there are options to suit every golfer’s preferences. By exploring different courses and sharing personal favorites, golf enthusiasts in the area can continue to enjoy the game and support the growth of public golf in the community.
