As golf season approaches, many aging golfers may find themselves struggling with physical limitations that affect their game. Mike Hansen, a Certified Fitness Trainer, highlights five main areas where aging golfers may face challenges compared to younger golfers. These include balance issues, shoulder mobility, speed generation, hip and shoulder disassociation, and cognitive function. To combat these effects of aging, Hansen has created a simple routine of five exercises to help improve golf performance and overall physical health.

For better balance, Hansen recommends practicing single-leg rotations to improve stability and weight distribution during the swing. Improving shoulder function can be achieved through kneeling thoracic rotations with shoulder stretching to increase mobility and prevent swing faults. To increase swing speed, Hansen suggests performing banded, low-to-high golf-swing rotations to engage the lower body and generate more power in the swing. Enhancing hip and shoulder separation can lead to a more consistent swing, and he recommends supported hip rotations to address limitations in this area.

Additionally, Hansen emphasizes the importance of cardiovascular exercise to improve cognitive function and overall energy levels on the golf course. By incorporating activities that elevate the heart rate within the recommended range based on age, golfers can enhance physical fitness and mental acuity during play. It is crucial to consult a healthcare provider before starting any strenuous exercise program to ensure safety and appropriateness for individual health needs.

Given the physical demands of golf and the impact of aging on performance, implementing a regular exercise routine can help maintain and improve golfing abilities over time. By focusing on key areas of physical fitness such as balance, mobility, speed, and energy levels, aging golfers can mitigate the effects of aging on their game and enjoy continued success on the course. Hansen’s expert advice and strategic exercise plan offer practical solutions for older golfers looking to enhance their physical capabilities and optimize their golf performance.
