Guide for Teachers: How to Find the Perfect Short-Putt Speed

For many golfers, a three-foot putt can be a daunting task, especially under pressure in a crucial match. The common mistake amateurs make with these putts is not hitting the ball firmly enough. They often try to cozy the ball up to the hole, fearing a comeback putt if they miss. This lack of pace causes the ball to veer off its line, and playing too much break can further complicate things. To improve three-foot putts, finding the perfect speed is essential.

One helpful drill to determine the ideal speed for three-foot putts involves placing three balls on a flat surface on the practice green. Putt the first ball as slowly as possible, just enough to trickle over the front edge of the cup. Then putt the second ball at a faster speed so that it hits the back of the hole and drops in without lipping out. Finally, putt the third ball at a speed between the first two, aiming for it to carry to the center of the cup. Practicing this drill regularly can help golfers become more confident in their short putting game and eliminate the fear of missing those crucial three-footers.

Performing this drill consistently in practice sessions and before matches can significantly improve a golfer’s short putting skills. By mastering the ideal speed for three-foot putts, players can increase their chances of sinking these putts and saving strokes on the course. The confidence gained from practicing this drill can translate to improved overall performance on the greens, making a significant difference in a golfer’s game.

Jason Baile, a Golf Digest 50 Best Teacher and the director of instruction at Jupiter Hills Club in Tequesta, Fla., recommends this drill to help golfers improve their three-foot putting game. With his expertise and guidance, golfers can work on mastering the speed of their putts and gaining confidence in their short game. Baile’s teaching methods have helped many golfers improve their putting skills and lower their scores on the course. By following his advice and practicing the recommended drill, golfers can see a noticeable improvement in their putting performance.

The key to successful three-foot putting lies in finding the right balance between speed and line. By practicing the recommended drill and focusing on hitting putts with the correct pace, golfers can improve their chances of sinking those crucial short putts. Baile’s expertise and guidance in this area can help golfers fine-tune their putting skills and develop confidence in their ability to make three-footers consistently. With regular practice and attention to speed control, golfers can overcome the fear of missing short putts and improve their overall putting performance.
