A Famous California Course Switches to Dwarf Bermuda Grass, Embracing Hot Desert Trend

Coachella Valley golf courses are currently experiencing a trend towards utilizing MiniVerde, a type of dwarf Bermuda grass with a dark color that has become popular as a new greens surface at many desert facilities. The Pate Course at Rancho La Quinta Country Club recently underwent a renovation that included transitioning all 18 greens on the course from Tifdwarf Bermuda to MiniVerde. This change was overseen by Director of Agronomy Christopher Erickson, who has experience managing MiniVerde in Texas and believes in its benefits such as minimal grain and not requiring overseeding in the winter.

The decision to not overseed the Pate greens this year at Rancho La Quinta will allow the MiniVerde to establish itself before being introduced to cool-weather grasses the following year. The club’s membership has shown excitement and support for this change after being educated on the benefits by Erickson. Additionally, the process of transitioning to MiniVerde involved expanding the greens back to their original sizes and contours, with the contours now within a quarter of an inch of the original plans from 2000.

In addition to changing the greens to MiniVerde, Rancho La Quinta also swapped out the sand in all 89 bunkers on the Pate Course with Augusta White sand, which provides a bright and visually appealing look while also being more cost-effective. Bunker linings were also updated with a white lining known as Bunker Solutions, which allows for better playability and maintenance in the bunkers. The use of Augusta White sand also reduces the amount of material needed in the bunkers, leading to potential cost savings in the future.

Aside from the changes to the greens and bunkers, Rancho La Quinta also made improvements to the teeing area and cart paths around the practice facility. The leveling of the teeing area and widening of cart paths with pavers enhance the overall playing experience for golfers at the club. These enhancements demonstrate the club’s commitment to providing top-notch facilities and amenities for their members and guests.

Overall, the renovation at Rancho La Quinta represents a significant upgrade to the Pate Course, improving the playability and aesthetics of the course. The decision to transition to MiniVerde and Augusta White sand showcases the club’s dedication to staying current with trends in golf course maintenance and providing a high-quality experience for golfers. With these changes in place, Rancho La Quinta is poised to continue attracting golfers and maintaining its reputation as a premier golf destination in the Coachella Valley.
