Angel Cabrera’s return to competitive golf after two years in prison for domestic violence and other charges has been a success story. He made his PGA Tour Champions return in June in Wisconsin and won a match play event in England. He is now in contention at a major tournament, the Senior Open Championship, just five shots behind leader K.J. Choi going into the final round.

Cabrera struggled a bit in the third round with a few bogeys and a single birdie on the front nine, but he caught fire on the back nine with a 33 to move into fifth place at 3 under for the tournament. Choi leads at 8 under, with Richard Green, Arjun Atwal, and Paul Broadhurst ahead of Cabrera. As a past winner on the PGA Tour, Cabrera is a PGA Tour Champions member and is eligible for both restricted and unrestricted sponsor exemptions to enter events.

Choi, on the other hand, is looking to win his first Senior Major title and is currently in the lead heading into the final round. The eight-time PGA Tour winner overcame a rough stretch on the back nine but managed to post a birdie on the final hole to regain the lead. He acknowledged his mistakes and is focused on making no errors in the final round to secure the victory.

The PGA Tour Champions allows past champions like Cabrera to compete in events based on how the field is filled. Cabrera’s major championship win makes him eligible for both restricted and unrestricted sponsor exemptions, and there is no limit to the number of sponsor exemptions he can receive. He is also exempt to compete in an event qualifier as a past champion on the PGA Tour, giving him opportunities to continue participating in competitive golf.

Cabrera’s journey back to competitive golf has been met with some success, as he is proving that he still has what it takes to compete at a high level. His recent performance in the Senior Open Championship demonstrates his capability to contend in major tournaments and potentially secure more victories in the future. With the support of sponsor exemptions and his past champion status, Cabrera has the opportunity to continue showcasing his talent on the PGA Tour Champions.

In contrast, Choi is looking to add another milestone to his already impressive career by winning his first Senior Major title. Despite some challenges in the third round, he remains focused on making smart decisions and avoiding mistakes in the final round. His experience and determination make him a formidable opponent and a strong contender for the championship title at the Senior Open Championship.
