Brian Harman’s recent win at the Valero Texas Open has brought attention to TaylorMade’s new prototype zero torque putter, the Spider 5K-ZT. This putter marks the company’s first entry into the zero torque putter space, which has been gaining popularity in the golf world in recent years. Harman made the switch to this new putter from his old TaylorMade Spider CB OS, which he had been using for almost a decade. The decision to switch putters paid off for Harman, as he had an impressive performance on the greens during the tournament, finishing sixth in the field in Strokes Gained: Putting and ultimately securing his fourth PGA Tour win.

Zero torque putters are a unique type of putter that features a center shaft and onset, with the shaft entering the head behind the club face. This design allows the putter to be more balanced, with the toe sticking up instead of down, creating a more stable putting stroke. While TaylorMade has not released much information about the Spider 5K-ZT, Harman found that the new model’s more upright lie angle helped improve his aim and alignment. The new putter allowed him to get his eye line more over the ball, making it easier for him to line up his putts accurately.

Harman’s decision to switch putters was influenced by his previous struggles with putting, particularly from 10 to 20 feet. Despite having a strong iron game, Harman found that he was not converting enough putts from mid-range distances, leading him to consider a change. After trying out the Spider 5K-ZT during the Valero Texas Open, Harman felt that the putter fit his stroke well and gave him more confidence on the greens. The new putter helped him free up his stroke and make more putts, ultimately leading to his victory.

The success of Harman with the Spider 5K-ZT has sparked interest among other PGA Tour players and golf enthusiasts. The performance of zero torque putters has already attracted attention from other brands such as L.A.B., Bettinardi, Odyssey, and PXG, all offering their own versions of these putters. The rise of zero torque putters in the market suggests a shift towards more balanced and stable putting strokes, which may benefit players seeking to improve their performance on the greens.

TaylorMade’s entry into the zero torque putter space with the Spider 5K-ZT indicates the company’s commitment to innovation and technology. The new putter design offers players like Harman an opportunity to enhance their putting performance by addressing alignment and stability issues. Harman’s success with the Spider 5K-ZT demonstrates the potential impact of equipment changes on a player’s game, highlighting the importance of finding the right tools to suit individual preferences and playing styles. As more players experiment with TaylorMade’s newest putter, it is likely that we will see increased interest and adoption of zero torque putters on the PGA Tour and beyond.

Overall, Brian Harman’s win with the TaylorMade Spider 5K-ZT at the Valero Texas Open has brought attention to the growing trend of zero torque putters in the golf industry. Harman’s decision to switch putters and the subsequent improvement in his putting performance highlight the impact that equipment changes can have on a player’s game. With more players exploring the benefits of zero torque putters and brands like TaylorMade introducing innovative designs, the future of putting technology looks promising. As golfers continue to seek ways to improve their performance on the greens, zero torque putters offer a promising solution for better alignment, stability, and ultimately, more made putts.
