Brooks Koepka Exits LIV Golf: A Major Shift in Professional Golf

In a monumental decision for his career, five-time major champion Brooks Koepka has officially parted ways with LIV Golf. This exit marks a significant moment for both Koepka and the Saudi-backed league, leading to speculation about his potential return to the PGA Tour.

The Announcement

LIV Golf confirmed the news with a statement that emphasized their commitment to player welfare. Talor Gooch has stepped in as the new captain of the Smash team that Koepka previously led. LIV’s CEO, Scott O’Neil, communicated that Koepka and the league "amicably and mutually agreed" to his departure, emphasizing Koepka’s desire to prioritize family time.

"Brooks is prioritizing the needs of his family and staying closer to home," O’Neil stated. "We appreciate the significant impact he has had on the game and wish him continued success, both on and off the course."

Background and Implications

Koepka’s departure follows a complex relationship with LIV Golf, where he was one of the league’s marquee signings upon its launch in 2022. Although details of his contract remain undisclosed, Koepka was believed to have had another year left. The PGA Tour’s existing policy prohibits players from rejoining immediately after leaving, as he would need to wait one year from December 2022, when he last participated.

Current Status in Golf

Koepka began his professional career on the European Tour and still has opportunities to compete there. This year, he played four events on that tour, finishing fourth in the French Open just prior to his appearance at the Ryder Cup. Notably, his form has raised questions about his capacity to compete this year, rendering him a non-factor in 2023 Ryder Cup considerations.

His manager at Hambric Sports indicated that Koepka will provide no additional comments at this time beyond his statement of gratitude for his time at LIV.

PGA Tour Reaction

The PGA Tour acknowledged the significance of Koepka’s exit, releasing a statement that showcased their continued commitment to professional golfers.

"Brooks Koepka is a highly accomplished professional, and we wish him and his family continued success," they stated. "The PGA Tour continues to offer the best professional golfers the most competitive, challenging, and lucrative environment in which to pursue greatness."

Before his announcement, Koepka had already informed the PGA Tour of his plans to depart from LIV.

Future Prospects

Koepka now faces the initial step of reapplying for PGA Tour membership, as he was not involved in the antitrust lawsuit that LIV players filed against the Tour in 2022. His previous career highlights include spending 47 weeks at No. 1 in the world and winning the PGA Championship at Oak Hill in 2023.

Despite enjoying five wins with LIV, his performance dwindled, with only two top-10 finishes in 2025 and a disappointing 31st place in the standings. His candid comments regarding LIV’s progression showcased growing frustration at the league’s status.

The Road Ahead for LIV Golf

Koepka’s exit leaves notable figures like Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm as the primary attractions in LIV Golf. Currently, the league has signed just two players, Victor Perez and Laurie Canter, for its upcoming 2026 season, which is set to commence in February in Saudi Arabia.

As LIV Golf awaits its application to join the Official World Golf Ranking system, the league faces challenges in player selection and maintaining competitive stature compared to established golf tours.

This development in professional golf underscores a shifting landscape, as former icons navigate the complexities between traditional tours and alternative golf leagues. Keep an eye on Brooks Koepka’s next moves as he continues to redefine his legacy in the sport.
