The 2024 Players Championship will be remembered for Scottie Scheffler’s final-round brilliance and Wyndham Clark’s devastating birdie lipout. However, Xander Schauffele, the 54-hole leader, arguably suffered the worst heartbreak on Sunday. Despite an impressive career with seven PGA Tour wins, Schauffele is missing a major victory on his resumé. He has finished runner-up at TPC Sawgrass for the second time and his reputation for not securing more wins despite being in contention led to discussions about his runner-up ratio.

Analyzing Schauffele’s career top-two finishes against other top tour pros, it was found that he has won 35 percent of the time he has finished in the top two at PGA Tour events. This ratio seemed lower than expected, with many expecting a more even split. While Schauffele performed well on Sunday, he missed crucial putts to tie the lead on the final stretch. Comparing his ratio to other players like Scheffler, Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, and Brooks Koepka, it is evident that some players are better at closing out tournaments than others.

Luck plays a factor in this statistic, with some players having better win rates in top-two finishes than others. Looking at larger sample sizes like Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods, it is clear that certain players excel at closing out tournaments. Schauffele’s performance is similar to Jim Furyk, as both players have not capitalized on as many opportunities as they would have liked. Despite having just turned 30, Schauffele has time to improve his runner-up ratio and secure major victories in the future.

With the Players Championship now in the books, Schauffele will look to bounce back and secure his elusive major victory. As one of the top players on the PGA Tour, he has the talent and potential to achieve greatness in the sport. By analyzing his performance and comparing it to his peers, it is clear that Schauffele has the skill to win at the highest level. With continued dedication and perseverance, Schauffele can overcome the obstacles and challenges that come with competing at the elite level of professional golf.

The discussion around Schauffele’s runner-up ratio sheds light on the competitive nature of the sport and the challenges that players face in securing wins. While some players have higher win rates in top-two finishes, others struggle to close out tournaments consistently. Schauffele’s journey to major victory will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike, as he looks to add a significant achievement to his already impressive career. As he continues to compete at the highest level, Schauffele’s determination and talent will be key factors in determining his success on the PGA Tour.
