Defending FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland embraces underdog role in playoffs

Viktor Hovland, the reigning FedEx Cup champion, has been struggling this season with just one top-10 finish in 13 starts, putting him at No. 57 in the FedEx Cup standings. In order to defend his title, he needs to make significant improvements in the FedEx St. Jude Championship and climb into the top 50 to qualify for the playoffs. However, history shows that no winner of the BMW Championship has failed to qualify and defend their title since the playoffs began in 2007.

Growing up in Norway, where the path to the PGA Tour is challenging, Hovland has always been an underdog, a position he embraces. Despite his struggles this season, he remains optimistic and determined to work on his weaknesses and return to his winning ways. Hovland acknowledges that a coaching change and a shift in focus on perfecting his swing have backfired, leading to a decline in his performance.

Hovland’s short game, which was previously his weakest point, has suffered due to his increased attention on his full swing. With a fall in various statistical rankings, Hovland recognizes the need to go back to basics and work on regaining his previous form. Working with swing instructor Joe Mayo, who guided him to his FedEx Cup victory, Hovland is determined to make improvements and get back on track.

The challenge for Hovland lies in rediscovering his old swing pattern and regaining the confidence he once had in his game. While he may not perform at his best immediately, Hovland is focused on the journey of improvement and progress. Despite the uncertainties of when he will peak again, Hovland remains committed to the process and the pursuit of excellence in his game.

For Hovland, the struggle to find his best form is part of the allure of golf, a game where even the best players face challenges and setbacks. Embracing his underdog status, Hovland finds motivation in the journey towards perfection in his swing. While there are no guarantees of success, Hovland’s dedication to improvement and his willingness to learn from his mistakes set him on a path towards potential greatness.

As Hovland navigates the ups and downs of the PGA Tour, he remains determined to overcome his current challenges and return to the top of his game. With a blend of perseverance, self-reflection, and a commitment to improvement, Hovland embodies the spirit of a true competitor. While the road ahead may be uncertain, Hovland’s willingness to embrace the underdog role and face his struggles head-on reflects his resilience and determination to succeed in the face of adversity.
