Justin Leonard, a former PGA Tour player, is currently competing on the PGA Tour Champions circuit in search of his first win. Despite a successful career on the regular PGA Tour with 12 wins, including a major championship, Leonard has yet to secure a victory on the senior circuit after 38 events. However, his recent performance at the Ascension Charity Classic in St. Louis, Mo., has placed him in contention for a potential win.

Leonard’s success at the Ascension Charity Classic can be attributed to a phone lesson with his swing coach, Randy Smith, that took place in his driveway. Following a disappointing finish at the Ally Challenge in Michigan, Leonard reached out to his coach for advice. Smith identified that Leonard’s grip was too much in the palm of his hand, affecting his swing and speed off the tee. Through a series of one-handed swings in his driveway, Leonard was able to adjust his grip and improve his swing mechanics.

The impact of the driveway lesson was evident in Leonard’s performance during the first round of the Ascension Charity Classic, where he posted four birdies and an eagle. The adjustments made to his grip and swing resulted in increased speed and accuracy on the course. A win at the tournament would not only mark Leonard’s first victory on the PGA Tour Champions but also propel him significantly in the Charles Schwab Cup standings.

Despite his success on the course, Leonard acknowledges the challenges and uncertainties that come with professional golf. He credits the dedication and passion of all golfers, including himself, in their pursuit of success in the sport. The thrill of experiencing a round of golf where everything clicks reaffirms Leonard’s commitment to his training and technique.

As the regular season on the PGA Tour Champions winds down, Leonard’s performance at the Ascension Charity Classic represents a turning point in his pursuit of a win. With a strong showing in St. Louis, Leonard has positioned himself for a potential victory that would not only boost his standings in the Charles Schwab Cup but also validate his dedication to improving his game. As he progresses through the tournament, Leonard remains focused on maintaining his positive momentum and achieving a memorable finish on Sunday.
