Four Tips Helped a Young Golfer Calm her Nerves and Improve her Game

Golf anxiety is a common issue that many players face, impacting their performance on the course. The mental aspect of the game can be a significant challenge, leading to feelings of pressure, nervousness, and self-doubt. While physical skills can often be improved through practice, addressing mental obstacles requires a different approach. Pro players have also struggled with mental issues, impacting their performance on the PGA Tour. Learning to control emotions and stay focused during challenging moments can help players elevate their game.

GOLF Top 100 Teacher John Dunigan recently worked with a high school golfer who was experiencing extreme anxiety leading up to tryouts for her school’s team. Despite having the physical skills needed to compete, the student’s mental game was holding her back. Dunigan shares four key tricks that he used to help the student manage her golf anxiety and perform at her best during tryouts. These tricks are simple exercises that can be applied by any player facing similar mental hurdles on the golf course.

One of the key strategies Dunigan shared with his student was to view nerves as excitement rather than fear. He likened the experience of playing golf to riding a roller coaster, where the highs and lows can be exhilarating. By embracing nerves and focusing on the controllable aspects of each shot, players can shift their mindset and perform better under pressure. Another important tip was to accept the possibilities in golf, as outcomes can vary regardless of how well one prepares.

Avoiding time-traveling and staying present in the moment was another crucial aspect of managing golf anxiety that Dunigan emphasized. By focusing on the shot at hand and letting go of attachment to past mistakes or future results, players can improve their concentration and performance. Utilizing breathing exercises before each shot can also help players relax and release tension, allowing for a smoother swing and better outcomes on the course.

Dunigan’s student applied these mental tricks during her tryouts and saw immediate results, shooting impressive scores and earning a spot on the team. By channeling her anxiety into excitement and focusing on the present moment, she was able to overcome her mental barriers and play to her full potential. These strategies can be valuable tools for any golfer facing anxiety or pressure on the course, helping them reset their mindset and perform at their best. By mastering the mental aspect of the game, players can unlock their full potential and enjoy a more fulfilling golf experience.
