Essex native Harley Smith captured the English Amateur Championship title after a thrilling final day of golf at Seaton Carew. In a 36-hole final match against Will Tate, Smith found himself 7-up through 13 holes before Tate mounted an impressive comeback to force an extra 37th hole. However, it was Smith who ultimately sealed the victory with a scintillating performance, including holing out for eagle twice on the 9th hole.
Both Smith and Tate started the final day steadily, with the first three holes halved. However, Smith began a remarkable run after sinking a 10-foot birdie putt on the 4th hole. He went on to win six consecutive holes, including an incredible eagle from 91 yards out on the 9th. By the end of the front nine, Smith had built a commanding 6-up lead.
While Tate managed to claw back a couple of holes, Smith maintained his lead with solid play throughout the match. Tate showed resilience by narrowing the deficit to just two holes at one point, prompting a tense back-and-forth battle between the two golfers. Smith’s ability to stay composed under pressure and deliver clutch shots ultimately secured his victory.
Despite a late surge from Tate, including a birdie on the 18th to force an extra hole, Smith held his nerve and eventually emerged as the 2024 English Amateur champion. Reflecting on his win, Smith described it as an “unbelievable feeling” and praised Tate for his tenacity and strong play throughout the match.
Smith’s remarkable performance included two hole-outs for eagle on the 9th hole, a feat he attributed to strategic shot-making and a bit of luck. Following his win, Smith wasted no time in celebrating as he headed straight to Scotland to represent England in the Women’s & Men’s Home Internationals.
As the newly crowned English Amateur champion, Smith emphasized his excitement about representing his country and competing alongside a talented team of golfers. His dedication to the game and ability to rise to the occasion in high-pressure situations have solidified his status as a rising star in the world of amateur golf. With this prestigious title under his belt, Smith’s future in the sport looks promising.
