Noah Chast, a reporter for ABC 25 in Columbia, S.C., played his first-ever round of golf at Augusta National Golf Club, just 24 hours after Rory McIlroy had won the Masters. Despite not considering himself a golfer, Noah’s name was drawn in Augusta National’s media lottery, allowing him to be one of 28 media members to play the course on Monday. The experience was a dream come true for Noah, as he teed off with three other local TV reporters, playing out the fantasy of millions of avid golfers.

Before playing at Augusta National, Noah’s golf experience was limited to the driving range, pitch-and-putts, and one other round of 18 holes at a bachelor party. Winning the press lottery to play at Augusta National came as a surprise to Noah, who described his initial reaction as disbelief and laughter. Despite his lack of golf experience, Noah appreciated the rarity of the opportunity and was eager to have fun and soak up the experience.

Driving down Magnolia Lane and being assigned Patrick Reed and Herman Keiser’s locker added to Noah’s sense of imposter syndrome and awe. With the guidance of his caddie, Shane, Noah attempted to make solid contact during his warm-up, with mixed results. His first tee shot was embarrassing, but the atmosphere and friendly demeanor of those at Augusta National helped ease the pressure.

Throughout the round, Noah faced challenges in adjusting his game on such a difficult course and implementing his caddie’s advice in real time. Despite the brutal greens of Augusta, Noah managed to avoid any 6- or 7-putts. While he initially started keeping score, Noah eventually focused on enjoying the experience and keeping pace with his group.

One standout moment for Noah was making a long putt on the 17th hole, which he cherished as a highlight of the day. Walking the course and playing shots from similar locations to where McIlroy had played added to the surreal experience for Noah. Despite the challenges and embarrassing moments, Noah found the expertise of the caddies and the emptiness of the course without patrons to be remarkable.

After his epic first round of golf at Augusta National, Noah expressed a twofold feeling of both the beauty and pristine nature of the course making it hard to replicate the experience, and his competitive drive pushing him to improve as a golfer. While uncertain about pursuing golf further, Noah’s experience at Augusta National may have sparked a newfound interest in the sport. In the end, despite his initial doubts about belonging at such a prestigious course, Noah valued the opportunity and the unique experience it provided.
