Jerry Sarvadi, an immigrant success story, founded The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland, which will host the Genesis Scottish Open for the sixth time. Sarvadi, from a family of Romanian immigrants, discovered golf as a caddie and later became successful in the aviation fuel industry. In 2002, an idea to build a golf course in Scotland next to Muirfield was born, and after negotiations, a deal was struck for the property. Sarvadi raised $12 million from initial members to fund the project.

With architect Tom Doak initially passing on the job, Sarvadi was persistent and eventually convinced him to design The Renaissance Club. The course opened to rave reviews in 2008 and has since undergone modifications to make it tournament-ready. Sarvadi was also able to acquire additional land from Muirfield to enhance the course, adding three spectacular seaside holes. Hosting professional golf events was always in the plans for Sarvadi, who spends a significant amount of time in Scotland overseeing operations.

Sarvadi’s vision for The Renaissance Club to host major events came to fruition with the Genesis Scottish Open, a co-sanctioned event between the DP World Tour and PGA Tour. The tournament has attracted a strong global field and offers full FedEx Cup points. Sarvadi’s brother, Paul, also has ties to professional golf through his company’s sponsorship of a PGA Tour Champions event in Houston. The Sarvadi family seems to have a knack for success, with Jerry passing on day-to-day operations to his brother.

The Genesis Scottish Open has been a great fit for The Renaissance Club, showcasing the course and attracting top players. The event’s success has solidified the club’s reputation as an American-built private course hosting professional tournaments in Scotland. Sarvadi plans to continue hosting the DP World Tour and hopes to extend the partnership with Genesis as the title sponsor. The Sarvadi family’s story is a testament to hard work, perseverance, and the pursuit of dreams.
