How Improper Distance Gapping Could Be Harming Your Performance

Proper club gapping and set composition are essential for every golfer looking to improve their game. Gapping refers to the distance increments between each club in a golfer’s set. Ideally, there should be a consistent gap of 8-12 yards between each club. When there are overlaps or gaps in distances between clubs, it can lead to uncertainty and poor shot-making on the course. This is where understanding the purpose of each club, its carry distance, and its role in your bag become crucial.

If you find yourself in awkward in-between distances during a round of golf, it may be a sign of poor gapping in your set. It’s important to ensure that every club in your bag serves a specific purpose and fills a necessary distance gap. This can help eliminate second-guessing and improve the consistency of your game. Many golfers make the mistake of carrying clubs they rarely use while overlooking key distance gaps that could benefit their performance.

When it comes to setting up your bag, consider factors such as wedge gapping, iron lofts, hybrids vs. long irons, and driver and wood selection. Pay attention to the lofts of your clubs rather than just the number stamped on them, as modern iron lofts have been getting stronger. Adding a gap wedge to smooth out the transition between your pitching wedge and sand wedge can improve your control on approach shots. Additionally, replacing long irons with hybrids or high-lofted fairway woods can provide added forgiveness and playability for many golfers.

To ensure proper club gapping and set composition, it is recommended to undergo a professional club fitting. Companies like True Spec Golf offer fittings with experts and launch monitors to determine your exact carry distances and optimize your bag accordingly. Having the right gapping in your set can lead to more confident swings, better scores, and ultimately, more enjoyment on the golf course. Don’t make the game harder on yourself by carrying the wrong clubs; invest in a professional fitting to dial in your distance gapping and set composition for improved performance.
