Golf is a challenging sport, and adding pressure to the mix can make even the simplest shots feel impossible. Handling nerves on the course is a crucial skill that can separate good golfers from great ones. The best way to improve under pressure is through experience, specifically by putting yourself in high-pressure situations repeatedly. While there’s no substitute for feeling those nerves on course, there are ways to simulate those feelings during practice. GOLF Teacher to Watch Christy Longfield shares a high-pressure chipping game that can help players improve their skills under stress.

Longfield’s practice game involves spending 30 or 60 minutes on the chipping green with three or six balls, respectively. The objective of the game is to sink a chip with one of the balls before time runs out. After each chip, players must move to a new location with a different lie, grass condition, distance, and slope. This simulates on-course practice and challenges players to adapt to varying conditions. As players make successful chips, they remove those balls from the rotation, making subsequent shots more challenging. The longer players go without missing a chip, the harder the game becomes.

A key aspect of the game is the time pressure, forcing players to make decisions quickly and execute shots under stress. By practicing in this high-pressure environment, players can improve their ability to perform when the stakes are high on the course. This game is a valuable tool for developing resilience and composure on the golf course, qualities that are essential for success in competitive play. By repeatedly putting themselves in stressful situations during practice, players can build the mental toughness needed to succeed in tournaments and pressure-packed situations.

The game not only helps players improve their chipping skills but also their mental game, as they learn to manage nerves and make smart decisions under pressure. This combination of technical and mental training is essential for becoming a well-rounded and successful golfer. By incorporating high-pressure practice games like Longfield’s chipping game into their training routine, players can develop the skills and mindset needed to excel in competitive golf. Practicing under pressure allows players to build confidence in their abilities and trust their skills when the heat is on during rounds. This game is a valuable addition to any golfer’s practice regimen, helping them prepare for the challenges of tournament play.
