The Rules of Golf can be challenging to understand, but thankfully, the Rules Guy is here to help answer any questions you may have. In a recent query, a golfer asked about taking relief from a mole hill after their ball landed within an inch of a mole track. The Rules Guy explained that ground pushed up by an animal burrowing underground, such as a mole, is considered an abnormal course condition. This means that free relief is allowed if the pushed-up ground interferes with the player’s lie, stance, or swing, unless the Committee has limited relief to only lie and swing by local rule. For more information, the golfer was directed to consult Rule 16.1 and the Definition of Animal Hole.

In another inquiry, a golfer asked if their friend could clean or replace their ball after a fox urinated on it. The Rules Guy clarified that the player is entitled to the lie present when the ball came to rest. Therefore, the player may lift and clean the ball, especially if there is casual water present, allowing the ball to be cleaned and disinfected if necessary. If you have any questions about the Rules of Golf, you can reach out to the Rules Guy by sending your queries, confusions, and comments to rulesguy@golf.com.
