Johnston delivers a ‘devastating’ blow at Australian Open

American golfer Ryggs Johnston claimed his first DP World Tour victory at the ISPS HANDA Australian Open in Melbourne. The 24-year-old, who turned professional earlier this year, shot a closing 68 to finish 18 under par, securing a three-shot win over Curtis Luck. This victory also earned Johnston a Major debut at The Open next summer, alongside Luck and Marc Leishman.

Leishman tied for third place with Jasper Stubbs at 14 under par but secured the final Open spot based on his world ranking. Johnston admitted to being surprised by his win, as he was feeling tired from travel and Q-School and had low expectations going into the event. However, he remained focused and ultimately took home the €191,000 first prize and a spot in The Open.

The three events at the ISPS HANDA Australian Open included the men’s and women’s Australian Opens and the Australian All Abilities Championship. Jiyai Shin emerged victorious in the women’s event by finishing at 17 under par, while Simon Seungmin Lee won the Australian All Abilities Championship on his G4D Tour debut. This event showcased top talent from around the world and highlighted the diversity and inclusivity within the sport.

Johnston reflected on his win, stating that he was feeling a mix of stress and excitement as he approached the 17th green with a three-shot lead. Seeing his position on the leaderboard allowed him to relax and focus on finishing strong.
