The history of golf in the Coachella Valley is intertwined with the development and growth of the region over the last century. From the first golf holes at the Mashie Course in the Desert Inn in Palm Springs to the first PGA Tour event at Thunderbird Country Club in 1952, golf has played a significant role in shaping the desert community. The region has seen many firsts in the history of the sport, including the first LPGA event at the Tamarisk Country Club in 1953 and the first golfing president, Dwight Eisenhower, in 1954.

In 1955, the first Ryder Cup was played at Thunderbird Country Club, with the 1959 event taking place at Eldorado Country Club. The Coachella Valley has also been home to many significant tournaments, such as the first The American Express in 1960, originally known as the Palm Springs Golf Classic. The first LPGA major championship, the Colgate Dinah Shore Winner’s Circle, took place in 1972, with Jane Blalock emerging as the first champion at Mission Hills Country Club.

One of the most iconic moments in the history of golf in the Coachella Valley was in 1988 when Amy Alcott won the Nabisco Dinah Shore and famously jumped into the lake on the 18th hole at Mission Hills Country Club, now known as Poppie’s Pond. This event, known as the Champions Leap, has become a beloved tradition at the tournament, signaling victory and celebration for the champion.

Golf has not only shaped the cultural landscape of the Coachella Valley but also provided economic benefits to the region. With a thriving golf industry that attracts celebrities, professional golfers, part-time residents, and visitors alike, the sport has become a significant driver of tourism and business in the area. The Coachella Valley is home to numerous world-class golf courses designed by renowned architects, offering golf enthusiasts a diverse range of playing experiences.

The Coachella Valley’s rich history and connection to golf continue to draw players and fans from around the world, seeking to experience the unique blend of desert landscapes and championship golf courses. From the first golf holes at the Mashie Course to the iconic moment of the Champions Leap, the region’s golfing heritage is a testament to the enduring appeal and legacy of the sport in this vibrant desert community. Whether you are a seasoned player or a casual fan, the Coachella Valley offers a golfing experience unlike any other, steeped in tradition, history, and the spirit of competition.
