The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews recently made an exciting announcement that His Majesty, King Charles III, has accepted the patronage of the club. This tradition of having reigning monarchs serve as patrons of the club dates back to King William IV in 1834. The previous patron of the club was Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who held the position for an impressive 70 years. Martin Slumbers, the Secretary of The R&A, expressed pride in the late Queen’s patronage and is now looking forward to King Charles III’s support for the club’s work and commitment to the sport of golf worldwide.

In addition to the news of King Charles III’s patronage, The R&A also announced that Ian Pattinson will serve as captain in 2024/25, a role he earned through nomination by the Past Captains of the Club. Pattinson has been a member of The R&A since 1989 and has played various important roles within the club and the R&A Group over the last 30 years. His extensive experience includes chairing committees such as Rules of Golf and Equipment Standards, as well as serving as Chairman of the General Committee and the R&A Group boards from 2018-2022.

Pattinson’s involvement in golf extends beyond administrative duties, as he has also served as a Rules Official at prestigious events like The Open, the Masters, the US Open, the PGA Championship, the Women’s Open, the Solheim Cup, and leading amateur events such as the Walker Cup, the Curtis Cup, and the World Amateur Team Championships. Furthermore, he has acted as The R&A’s Rules of Golf advisor to broadcasting networks like the BBC and Sky Sports for The Open. Pattinson’s deep engagement with the sport and his expertise make him a valuable addition to the leadership team at The R&A.

The new R&A captain will officially begin his term on September 20 after the traditional driving-in ceremony on the first tee of the Old Course at St Andrews. Pattinson, who also served as captain at the Royal Worlington & Newmarket Golf Club in 1993, currently plays off a respectable handicap of 4.9. His longstanding involvement in golf at both the administrative and competitive levels showcases his dedication to the sport and makes him well-equipped to lead The R&A as captain in the upcoming years.

In conclusion, the appointment of King Charles III as the patron of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and Ian Pattinson as the incoming captain signals an exciting new chapter for the prestigious club. With a rich history of royal patronage and a captain with extensive experience and a strong passion for the sport, The R&A is poised for continued success in promoting and supporting golf on both a local and global scale. King Charles III’s support and Pattinson’s leadership will undoubtedly contribute to the club’s ongoing commitment to advancing the sport of golf and upholding its esteemed traditions.
