In the world of golf, new terms and concepts seem to pop up constantly, adding to the complexity of the game. To help make sense of it all, Golf Digest has compiled a list of noteworthy words and phrases that have been gaining traction in 2023. From Spin Loft to Broomstick, these terms cover a range of topics in the golf world.

Spin Loft is a metric used by players like Viktor Hovland to improve their short game. It measures the angle between the loft of the club at impact and the angle of attack, with a high Spin Loft resulting in more backspin. On the other hand, low Spin Loft is preferred for drives. By adjusting his angle of attack, Hovland was able to elevate his chipping game.

Broomstick, a non-traditional putting method, has made a resurgence in recent years, with players like Lucas Glover and Willy Zalatoris finding success with it. This technique, popularized by Adam Scott, has proven to be effective for certain players looking to improve their putting performance.

Zeroed refers to hitting the ball perfectly along the intended line, a critical skill for golfers aiming for precision in their shots. Up shoot spin cut, on the other hand, is an undesirable shot characterized by high launch and excessive spin, often resulting in a loss of distance and accuracy.

ProSendr is a training aid developed by renowned golf instructors Sean Foley and David Woods. This device is designed to help golfers achieve the optimal wrist angle during their swing, aiding in generating power and consistency in their shots.

NFG, an acronym for “No F—ks Given,” has found its way into the golf industry, with players like Max Homa sporting it on their gear during tournaments. This phrase reflects a carefree and confident attitude that can sometimes lead to improved performance on the course.

Panic Practice is a term used to describe aimless practice sessions that golfers engage in as a way to cope with stress before important tournaments or rounds. Unlike focused practice, panic practice lacks a clear goal or purpose, often resulting in ineffective preparation.

Jailbird, a putter model by Odyssey, has gained popularity among tour players in 2023, with multiple wins attributed to its performance. The success of this putter has solidified its reputation as a top choice for golfers looking to improve their putting game.

Controlling interest has become a critical issue in the golf world, particularly in the negotiations between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia’s PIF. This term refers to the ownership stake that gives one party significant control over the future direction of a venture, highlighting the importance of power dynamics in business dealings.

Non-conforming has taken on new significance in golf, especially concerning equipment regulations and advancements. As technology continues to evolve, distinguishing between conforming and non-conforming equipment, such as golf balls that exceed distance limits, has become a key issue for governing bodies like the USGA and R&A.

Netflix Bump refers to the impact of the streaming service’s golf series, “Full Swing,” on the sport. The show has brought increased attention to golf, leading to improved ratings and visibility for players like Joel Dahmen. This newfound exposure has injected a sense of excitement and coolness into the golf world, resonating with a broader audience.

CT Creep is a term used to describe the gradual increase in spring-like effect in older drivers over time, potentially rendering them non-conforming to regulations. This phenomenon has sparked discussions within the golf community about equipment standards and the need for continuous monitoring and enforcement to maintain a level playing field.
